I thought that the clip I got was for a 1996(I was told when I bought it) Skyline GTS-T (RB25DET) Type M (By steering wheel) but now I think I was lied to about the 1996 part. I was told, I dont know how true it is that the 95-98 ECR33 was the type 2 engine with the ignitor built into the coil packs. The 93-94 was the Type one with a seperate ignitor chip.

My engine has an ignitor chip so I am under the impression that it is a type 1.

But the year of my clip falls in the type 2 category. Here is a picture of the placard under the hood of my clip. can anyone decode this and tell me what year my engine is from?

I am not sure, I tried to use the chassis number to figure it out, like you do on american cars, but there is no reference to year there, only model (ECR33) and production number. No production date anywhere on there???

Yeah, inside the drivers door jamb that shows production date to the month, but I never got that part of the car.

The tenth digit in the american VIN shows the year it was produced, but the Japanese VIN is totally different.

Ours is 17 digits, their's apparently varies with model...ECR33, BNCR24 and then production number.....

I am so confused!

I was all confused about the year of my RB as well. If you look at the back of the plate covering the plugs, and there is a black box with two cables plugged into it. One from the harness, one to the plugs, it is a type I. If you just have a connector plugged into a connector. the plugs are both black on the type II, and there is no box. I believe the type II is a 97 or above. If you check the right side of this picture you will see the two black plugs (type II) http://www.osoiworks.com/v3/ow...2.jpg

I was told the 95-98 was type 2, I guess it must be 97-98. I definatel have a type 1 then....

Thanks for your help!

Your engine is from a 1993 R33. Here's a pic listing engine codes for most R33 variants over various years.

http://www.anberoka.com/240/r33yearcodes.jpg

Now if only I can find something similar for R32s to see what year my motor is.

TYPE 1 HAS ONE A SINGLE IGNITOR CHIPTYPE 2 HAS INDEPENDANT CHIPS ON THE COIL PACKS (SUPER EXPENSIVE)

TYPE 2 HAS INCREASED WIRING NEEDED AND EXPENSIVE IF ANYTHING EVER GOES WRONG WITH THE COIL PACK.

I would have still bought it, but I just want to be told the truth. I have had nothing but problems with this motor and now on top of everything I find out that it is 3 years older than I was told and probably has more miles.

Plus that means that it sat around for 3 years more if it DOES have the correct milage.

Just pisses me off all around that the guy I paid wasnt truthful

You are right about the years:

Series 1 = 93-94Series 2 = 95-97 or 98

My engine is a series 2 and has no single ignitor chip on the plug cover. There are no differences in the ecu pinouts. The series 2 ecu is better from what I've heard.

I wouldn't worry about it too much. Some of the people importing the engines don't even know what they are looking at, so it may not have been his fualt if he screwed you up. But then again it could be. I'd let him know, so he doesn't screw anyone else up. Maybe he will give you back some of the money you paid if he is cool about it.

Even if it sat for a long time it's likey it's still in good shape. You say it runs good right?

Good luck..

The 5 that you see is the year of the emperor or heisei. it is now heisei 15 so that would make your clip a 93. From what I know the series II came more often in the stagea. But dont know for fact.

There is 0 extra wiring needed.Another way I believe you can tell a sI from a sII are the two tps plugs on the throttle body. My sII engine: http://home.earthlink.net/~4rc...0.jpg

I just noticed the transmission code off the 240 JonPowell posted (FS5W71C) is exactly the same as the transmission code from my R32 clip. So I guess this is proof that the RB20 and KA manual trannies (or at least the internals) are the same?

While we're on the subject, do you guys think the RC43 after the transmission code on the Skyline means a 4.3 rear end? The 240 plate has RC40 and 240s have 4.06 or 4.08 rear ends right? If so this confirms that the skyline LSD would be a bit of a performance boost over an S13 one ;)

Hashi, I am not trying to argue, but on the 240 placard the kanji next to the "w" means plant, like the plant it was built in. The kanji on the R33 placard is exactly the same. If you tell me that that number DEFINATELY means it is a 93, I believe you, but why would they write "Plant" next to the year?

I thought that the transmissions looked VERY similar, this winter I am going to pull the trans and change the syncros. I will let you know how similar the insides are once its apart. I was going to try to change the gears over. I have an RB20 Transmission on my RB25DET.

I REALLY want to thank all of you for helping explain this. I think it has been confusing for me as well as others.

THANKS!!

RC43 is the axle number, but is it a code or the numbers? i found this site interesting, for R32s http://www.vspec.btinternet.co...s.pdf

edit: FSM says the thing after the transmission is the Axle Model, but my cars tag says RC35, and i have a 3.538 rear end so i guess it does equate to the gears.

No prob Jon. I will have my wife (JAPANESE) check out my data plate again and break it all down. I cant read it but she can so I will try to break it all down. But she hates when when I have her do my car stuff. Thinks its boring :)

Thanks, keep us informed. I just compared it all to the KA placard, but I could always be wrong.

Thanks again guys!

My RB20 plate has 5 in the lower right corner also. What was the last year R32 GTS-Ts were made? My motor had very low miles on it but they didn't make R32s all the way up to 93, did they? The production number on mine is 282073, which is probably one of the last ones made since none of the R33s have a production number that high.

92 was the last year of the R32. I think that number is the plant that the car was produced in.
