UPDATED BELOW

Hey guys, so after a year now driving my TT and with the NA sitting, I am getting to the point where I have to make a decision on how to proceed with the NA.
I have had a plan I've followed for the past year, but I am thinking that I may need to adjust that plan but am not sure, so you guys get a chance to throw in your 2 cents!

What would YOU do:
1. Keep it, try and store it better and keep saving/studying for a future swap. VK56 and RB25 are top wishes/choices currently.
UPDATE- Made the call to the inlaws, and I can store the Z for $90 a month not running, less slightly if it was. Good deal?

2. Strip off the considerable number of new and upgrade parts from the NA and sell the rest for scrap or whatever. A few minute possibilities there, I've yet to go there though...CUZ I STILL LUV HER. :chuckle:
3. Patch up the NA as best possible and sell as a running project car (see below), with the TT as the future project car when time, reality and finances allow.

Some background to consider:
As many of you may know I have a Super White/Red interior '90 NA (3/89 built) for many many years that now has been retired, 237K+ on the odo and most likely a spun bearing in the engine to go along with the fact it's TIRED.
I did a 5-speed swap with TT clutch/flywheel and all new parts except trans and shifter boots, Powertrix Race coilovers and all necessary bits, and more things than I can remember done to it by myself after a shop butchered her up on a waterpump/120K job and I took over repair duties after finding and joining NICO. Bottom line is there are a ton of new and useful parts in her that can be sold, or used.

Once the NA became too unreliable last year I bought a new Z for daily driver duty- a '93 TT I bought in San Francisco, flew down and drove home.
My TT is a CRP sweetheart with 142K miles now (124K miles when I bought it last year) who has only had one previous owner who took EXCELLENT care of her, with ALL maintenance done on schedule throughout it's life at the dealership it was bought from. I have added a upgraded oil cooler, the jspec front bumper and cone filter from the NA, along with the GTR brakes/rotors and 18" wheels and a few other small things like the brake brace and the injector voltage mod, and some minor interior details like Z1 gauge rings and minor pieces from the extra red interior I have.

So tell me what you would do!

Thats a hard one, what condition is the NA body/interior in, if it's esthetically mint there might be some wisdon to holding on to it since it is white/red.

Well, mint would be a stretch but the interior is nearly complete and in fair/good condition except the rear trunk panels which I need to swap out for a set I have in my extra red interior.
The body is straight, but frustratingly the asswipes who did bodywork for me after an accident years ago slipped in a non-OEM PS fender, before shipping it off to Maaco for a crappy paint job that now is showing some bad signs such as clearcoat peeling and moisture under the paint on the rear hatch and a few other places. Typical Maaco crap.
So it needs a interior refresh (pretty easy) and a strip and re-paint (NOT so cheap and easy) to be in 9 of 10 condition in those areas, IMO.

Oooh, thats a difficult decision to make, if you've got the space to store and don't mind it I'd say keep it, its a rare combo.

Find a place to store it. Like Nolimit said, it's a rare combo and worth waiting on to fix.

Yeah, that's what's eating me since I have the space, but can't store it correctly and it isn't something that can be sold quickly.
I'm hoping people with different fresh perspectives from mine have an idea or two that helps me see a solution somewhere that I am missing. I am nearly to the point of forcing my deadbeat landlord to let me build a carport on my dime, just so I can have it under roof cover in addition to the car cover, which would help quite a bit.

Thanks for the input, I do agree with your thinking as I still often regret long ago selling my '67 GTA Fastback- except when I buy gas.
But damn, I sure wish I still had that beast...

I don't think you want to know what I would do. :chuckle:

But a RB25DET wouldn't be too far from what I would do. And would not regret doing it. Straight 6's are easy to power up. I think you might find yourself driving it more than your TT. :chuckle:

Get it around to 400 hp, do a wire tuck. Clean up the exterior and interior. And you have yourself a "mean" street vehicle.

Hey Darin, good to hear from you and hope you have been doing well!
I do know what you would do and check in from time to time to see if you have gotten back to your project, and if I was anywhere near you I would bring it over and we would have some fun...and it would be easier to store that way at least!! :rotfl

I been well. Already 8 months into my "Product Development Engineer" position. Had a few hick-ups with my pickup. Brakes and front axle issues. I replaced just about everything, which ate into my fun money. I daily the truck, something I wish I could stop doing.

But I am kinda at a bind. I owe my fiancee a wedding, I known her for 8 years, we been engaged for 5ish years. So I been saving up for that. My project has now 1" of dust on it. I told my fiancee that I am going to get a welder so I can make some progress. This will be next winter.

Good Luck with your new job, sounds interesting.
And I suppose a new welder is the least you can do after paying for a wedding...and you gotta knock off that inch of dust! :frown:

I had an idea about some inlaws who have a boat storage business, and I remembered had an old fastback Mustang of a relative stored there- so maybe TWO relatives can store a car there?
Gonna have to drop a call soon, might be right in front of me after all!

I'd keep it man. It's rare, and you can't lie and say you're not emotionally attached to it.

I'm gonna buck the trend and say strip it of what you want need, and sell it as a rolling shell. Or convert the NA to an electric vehicle. (cue "crack is bad, m'kay" reply).

What are you doing for a winter beater? Or are you driving the Z with snow tires... Please don't say you're driving the Z with all seasons or summers.

You are right Ace, I am definitely attached to it since it's the car I've had the longest of any car I've owned. It also saw me through some tough and good times, it was a jobsite mule, on and on...and it deserves to finish up in style.
300ZXttZMAN wrote:Yea that sounds perfect. Especially if its free.
Heh, NOT free...this is the side of the family that, uh, well...how do I put it kindly...isn't in the charity business? But, if I can do it (I haven't been able to get in touch with that person yet) the cost would most likely not be steep and would be a once a year fee...and hopefully only for a year or two!

I tried to see myself doing this, and even set about making a plan to do so, but just can't do it to her unless there's NO other option.

I wish I had a Bill Gates/Paul Allen budget, an all-electric Z32 that really moves would be TOO cool...

Ummmm, er, uhhhhh....No Comment...
In my defense, we don't get snow around here and in the rare cases, I'm parked...

Updated above, as I was able to get in touch with the inlaws and got a price of $90 a month to store it.
Does this seem like a reasonable storage fee?

That's how much I paid for a 10x20 storage unit with security system.

Thanks Ace...I haven't looked into storage facilities so I appreciate the info as their price did seem a bit high, especially since they can't offer a REAL security setup as no one is on-site.
But now I suddenly remembered a good family friend I did work for years ago that has a lot of out buildings and storage space, and he's a MORE than reasonable guy...and just down the road a-ways...gotta make another call!

Let us know what your family friend has to say.. $90 a month would add up fast.

How soon do you plan on building it into a dedicated track machine?

Will do, still waiting for a call back. And yeah, $90 a month would add up into a lot of mod parts over 2+ years... :squint:
I'm hoping that I can get the resources saved (the TT ate my "fun" fund") over the next year or two, as well as finalize my powerplant of choice (RB25/26 or VK56- HOPING for more VK56 swap mods coming!) and get all of the learning/figuring done and resources lined up.
Seems like a 2-3 year project minimum unless I really come across some extra fun $, or some really smokin' deals.

OK- heard back on my latest attempt at finding a covered home for the NA, and no go with ol' Pat Heade...he's an old guy who has a million+ dollar home on a huge lakefront lot he had built slowly over MANY years through stuff he hunts down all over the place, and haggling deals with talented folks he knows to get the work done. QUITE the place he has. I was hoping that maybe even I could work out a deal to store it for occasional work he always wants done, such as some cabinet details he's been wanting me to do for years but I can never fit in.

SOOOO...the hunt continues, or I start buying lumber to build a carport.
