Automatic transmissions are a lot more difficult and expensive to repair. Plus, everyone needs to know how to drive a manual. As far as buying an old school Z, 240 or 280, I would highly advise against one as a DD. I have a 240Z. She is beautiful, fast, and fun but as with any 40+ year old car, she can be temperamental. Better to get something newer, more reliable, more likely to start every time you turn the key, less likely to piss (pick a fluid) all over your driveway for your first car.
