IThere is nothing I hate to see more, than ricers gutting their cats under the impression that it would net them more hp (this only works if you are making real HP).
Masterdebater, be careful, as the LA County Sheriff's Department is not new to this.
On top of your ref ticket, here are the fines:
"(b) The state board may collect a civil penalty not to exceed onethousand five hundred dollars ($1,500) for each violation of Section27156 of the Vehicle Code. Any penalties shall be paid to theTreasurer for deposit in the Air Pollution Control Fund. (c) The civilpenalty specified in subdivision (b) may be collected for one or moreviolations involving the tampering with or disabling of agasoline-powered vehicle's air injection, exhaust gas recirculation, crankcase ventilation, fuel injection, carburetion, ignition timing,or evaporative control system, fuel filler neck restrictor, oxygensensor or related electronic controls, or catalytic converter, or forthe use of leaded fuel in a vehicle certified for the use of unleadedfuel only. "
You can also get fined by the feds, up to $2,500 added to the state penalty.
"BOARD MEETING STATE OF CALIFORNIA AIR RESOURCES BOARD JULY 27 , 2007 MOBILE SOURCE ENFORCEMENT BRANCH ACTING CHIEF BINDER: This slide showssome typical after-market parts, including exhaust, super chargers, computer chips and in-take systems. Any emissions related part that isnot an OEM replacement must be covered by an executive order. We doenforce these requirements in the field.
Another area related to after-market parts that we are supporting isthe growing crack down on street racing by the California HighwayPatrol and local Sheriff and police departments. The ARB oftenreceives requests from law enforcement to assist their officers inspecial operations to prevent street racing. During these operations,ARB staff provide emissions control expertise to officers who issuethe 6 citations under Vehicle Code Section 27156. Citing drivers andspectators for emissions control violations and illegal after-marketparts has proven to be a very strong deterrent. In addition to payinga fine, the owners are required to bring their vehicles intocompliance, which is often a very expensive and painful endeavor. Weoften follow up on leads obtained during these operations toinvestigate possible illegal activities by after-market partmanufacturers, retailers and installers."
Here's a similar caution:
"California Air Resources BoardReport of Enforcement ActivitiesJanuary 1 - December 31, 2007
Mobile source enforcement staff have provided assistance to state andlocal law enforcement in their efforts to eradicate street racing.Often the vehicles involved in these unlawful activities are equippedwith illegal engine modifications and aftermarket parts. As thesetypes of modifications can cost thousands of dollars, citing thevehicle owners for tampering (under Vehicle Code section 27156) hasproven to be a powerful deterrent because the owner must show that theoffending equipment has been removed, in addition to paying therelated penalties. The ARB staff assist peace officers in writingsolid tampering citations that will support successful enforcementactions."
