What will fit?

I have an 07 Altima SE V6 with the 17" rims (offset 45) and need some help finding wheels. Would a 17x8 wheel with an offset of 20 fit? Or if I went with 18's with an offset of 42, would those fit? Can anyone explain exactly how the offsets work and how they'll affect my car? Thanks in advance.

If you go to Discount Tire's or most tire/wheel websites, you can see which rims should fit your car.
