sorry guys, i'm pretty much a newb about cars and i gotta do a oil change today and get it smogged so i can get it registered at the DMV.

my car has 129,000 miles on it and the previous own just did a head gasket repair and radiator hose repair

should i use Nissan 10w40? or should i go with a thicker viscosity? like 20w50 like the man that told me i should use at the nissan dealer. or should i got the the local auto store and just get the over-the-counter motor oil? also the old man that was at the dealer told me that the first gen 240sx did not use syntectic oil? so what brand should i get?

and also what type of transmission oil could i use on my transmission? i've ask the dealer and they said they don't know so i'm a bit confused myself. what type of dextron should i use?

thx i really appreaciated

I've always just used 10w30 (usually Valvoline, but that's just habit).

Just Automatic Transmission fluid should work (assuming it's not 5speed), rediculious the dealer doesn't know. Usually the bottle will tell you what cars it is good for. Or in a parts store they should tell you if one will work.

"over the counter" is fine. If your car came w/ an owner's manual, all your questions are answered in there.

In any case, for so cal area, 5w30 is the standard. 10w30 will work (from what I remember, I got the best gas mileage out of 5w30 vs other weights when my car was stock.

I've used everything from 5w30 to 10w40 when I was stock & it didn't matter too much except gas mileage - bought whatever was on sale.

20w50 is for turbo'd cars mostly, don't run it in your car... unless you are turbo.

Synthetic vs dino oil - that one you can search for, it's been discussed a million times. I've used both, they are fine. I like synthetic because it allows me to run longer w/o needing to change the oil.

The auto transmission fluid should be something like dextron iv or something - 99% of atf @ local autoparts stores are dextron iv or v (which is compatible as well).

People say there might be a leak ifyou switch friom dino to synthetic on high mileage car. I switched when my vert had 110,000 miles on it and it was just fine. Car runs smoother with synthetic and you can drive longer than with dino oil. I use 10W-30 Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

when i switched to synthetic I soon found out my valve cover gasket needed replacement cause there was oil everywhere as soon as i started the car . but I have no complaints on the synthetic since then.
