I am doing an engine swap and in the process I drained most of it so I figured why not put all new fluid in. Most of it came out when I removed the shifter

You might come across this at some point of your readings, but I'll tell you now anyways. DON'T buy GL-5 fluid for your transmission. It's been said(many times) that the extended pressure(EP) additives that are abundant in GL-5 will wear our brass syncro's twice as fast.

Just wanted to warn you, because I was told that GL-5 is fine for a GL-4 application. This was from a salesman at an AdvanceAuto parts store, who sounded like he knew what he was talking about. If you can't find a decent brand GL-4 at the auto parts store, go to the dealer. Don't cheap out on it either: you don't have to change it often so you may as well put something good in it. I used MT-90 from http://www.myoilshop.com, and love it.

I use Redline Heavyduty Shockproof for my transmission and VLSD. Seems to work really well for me.

okay simply use 2.4 quarts of Redline MT-90, GL-4. currently have it for months and loving it.

you can get it from advance auto parts. $7 bucks a bottle, you need to use 2.5, which is 2.4 quarts.

I looked everywhere for gl-4. I found lots of GL-5 and everybody said it was just better. I finally found some at advance though.

this is why you have to do a simple search, NOOB!!

My DIY comes first on the search list here, when you search for "transmission oil" keyword.

see other DIY too, but look into mine if you would like:

BTW, YOU BETTER RETURN GL-5 BACK. REASON WE DONT USE GL-5 IS BECUASE IT EATS AWAY YOUR TRANNYS SYNCROS. ESPECIALLY YELLOW METAL, BRONZE OR SOME OTHER STUFF.

RETURN IT BACK. GO TO ADVANCE AUTO PARTS, AND ORDER THRU THEM. THEY'LL DELIVER TO THE STORE FOR FREE. THEN U CAN GO AND PICK IT UP.

The factory service manual says API GL-4*2 is what is recommended. You need 5 1/8 pints, or 2.563 quarts.

You should go with what the FSM recommends every time.
