What turbo would you run to get to 500rwhp?

Discuss the RB20, RB25 and RB26 series engines.

I tried searching but was unable to get the info necessary.

My goal is 500-525 but I would be content with anything over 450....

Greddy intake manifold? y/n?Cams - HKS?Standalone ECU

Of course all the other necessities that com along with this kind of power.

It is for a track car.

Umm, what engine?

I'll guess RB25 since it would be just to left of impossible on a RB20, and if you are rich enough to have a 26, why shoot for only 500rwhp, right

--Turbo

I love my current Holset HX35/40 hybrid turbo. It's full boogy (1.7 bar) by like 3800rpm and is putting down right around 500rwhp (no dyno's here).

GT35R would get you a bit more than 500rwhp with AROUND the same kind of spool. The turbo would cost 6 or 7 times as much though.

TO4R would get you 500rwhp and then some.

--Cams

Stock cams will do fine.

--Mani

Greddy manifolds suck big floppy donkey d!ck. The crack a LOT. I like my HKS low mount for reliability, but it was a huge pain in the *** for changing turbos and fitment, so I'm going to an awesome turbular top mount made by my shop guy. fearsometea on here has a thread selling them.

--Computer

Most important thing is get something somebody can tune. Power FC doesn't do you any good if everybody around you only tunes Haltech. I run an FC though.

I have a built RB25DET and a Bullseye power S326 turbo that puts down 600-700 rwhp. It can be tuned to 500hp easily and works great (spools faster than GT35R). Good luck.

35r, tried and true.

With that said, unless you got extra money just laying around from the get go. I would get the swap in and running CORRECTLY first, then look for 500whp.

500whp in the S Chassis is well... pretty substantial

Thanks guys.

you are right, it is an RB25.

As far as tuning is concerned, I got that ALL covered. Thankfully..

So far I have only looked into Garrett (on their site now..) but open to others as well. I have heard so much negative feedback on non Garrett turbos.

I dont' care what they are, as long as they spool up as quick as humanly possible. I'm assuming at 3800 you are already flying and it starts picking up around 2500? Correct me if I'm wrong.

In the Garrett line I liked the 3076 - up to 525 and a medium frame. That should spool up pretty quick, but not sure if the 525 advertised is realistic.

As for the manifold, I should have been more clear - I meant the Greddy INTAKE manifold. It is advertised as flowing better and should make the ic piping easier to manage.

Again - if I'm off kilter, please let me know. I'm looking for positive feedback.

Out of curiosity - what is the limitation on the stock turbo?

thanks again.

yes, the greddy intake manifold would help you out. I'm running a RB25 w/ a greddy intake mani, and a T70 turbo....my spool is a bit later than the 35R but i will make about 500 as well when i get my tune finished and on a dyno :D

If the 3076 has this kind of response on the sr20 then it would super crazy on the rb25.

First things first.

The garret ratings are conservative, so 525 is a little on the conservative end. HOWEVER, garret is also rating that turbo in engine horsepower NOT wheel horse.

Now with the paper bench racing behind us. I am a big believer in the 3076, had it on my last car. It is all around a great turbo. It will spool fast (I would suspect in the low 3000s full boost), great transient response, and if you run it to its limits it will do almost exactly 500whp.... but again do realize you will probably need to push it to the MAX to see 500 and I wouldn't recommend doing that for a very extended period of time... in fact that's exactly why you see the rated spec at around 525 (about 450whp).

So while I think 450whp is plenty (Especially considering the powerband), if you are truly looking to run around with 500whp for an extended period of time you will probably want to step up to something a litte bigger than the 3076.

+1, the gt3076 is good for around 450whp , but for around the same price, you can get the new gt3082 , have around the same lag than the gt3076 , only 300-400 rmp after, and is good for 500whp or more.....
