take off oil pan and valve cover. Make sure the oil pan is perfectly flat with no dent at all. check pickup tube make sure it isn't bent or loose. While these things are off pour oil through the motor while turning it by hand. This will flush some of the old oil out. change the rear main seal and the timing chain tensioner. This is all stuff to do "just in case". Much easier to do now then after the motor is in, especially the rear seal :)

on top of getting an engine, transmission, harness & ecu.

You don't really need a new ignitor chip. I assume Nils just got one because his didn't come wth one. And you don't need to change the timing chain tensioner. You do that when you change the headgasket and the timing chain.

You don't need new belts if your belts aren't squeaking. Many people are using the belts that come with the engine and have no problem. I guess you can change it, but if you got a 98 blacktop, changing items that are in good condition isn't necessary, IMHO. Same for the clutch.

s13 was in production until 98. I think between 94 to 98, all the s13 had blacktop. The s13 blacktop is very similar to the s13 redtop, except that the blacktop has slightly different ECU tuning. Though, I may miss some stuff.
