Ok I started this rebuild since a timing chain guide broke off and was rattling around. The mileage on the engine is unkown as the odometer broke at 40K. Now I have just about finished tearing the engine apart and have noticed a few things.

1) Lots of caked on oil and sludge, definatley going to get the block and head cleaned thouroughly. Looks as though the previous owner didn't care much for oil changes.

2)Very little wear in the cylnder bore, all the cylnders measure about 3.5045 inches across and 3.5036 inches along the block just below the ridge. I plan on getting them bored and honed to 3.505 and using grade 3 pistons and rings.

3)Bearings and journals all look really good and measure within specification.

So now my plan is to replace the timing chain assembly, the oil pump and water pump, thermostat, PCV valve, pistons and rings, all gaskets, core plugs, valve stem seals, and the front and rear oil seals. My main question is since I have everything apart should I go ahead and replace the rod and main bearings and have the journals polished. Any other suggestions on stuff to do while I'm in here? This is my first full rebuild so any advice is greatly appreciated.

bearings definitly replace them if your gonna do all the other work you listed. have the crank journals mic'd and have your line bore checked by the shop doing the bore work.
