What to look for?

I have come across what I think is a good deal. I have not seen the car yet, But a friend of mine has. It is a 1991 240sx for $200.They say it is in good shape, but it needs a timing chain and cover. I know its very possible if the chain broke that there is internal damage. What do I need to look for, if anything, that will tell me if something is tore up? This would be my first Nissan, so I am very unfamiliar with these things. If the motor is trash but the car is in good shape, about how much am I looking at for a replacement engine? Thanks for the help!!!

Where are you located, if you don't want it I"ll buy it. : ) There really isn't much you can look for except for visible damage to the engine block or head, you can pull the valve cover and what not, but if you aren't allowed to look inside there isn't much you can do unless there is visible external damage. Replacement engine depends on what you want to put in it, there are at least 2 dozen members here who would buy that car from you for 500 dollars if you wanted to make a quick profit. : )
