You look for short cuts that the installer took. If you see a lot of them (bad wiring, stripped/missing bolts, etc), you know you are going to have headaches with the car. Also, talk to the owner and see how he talks about the car. If he can remember excatly what was done and when, you know he takes care of the car.
You have to look accidents that the car may have been in. You can see man made welds on the body, etc. Bring a magnet with you and check the body for filler. The magnet (lightweight) will not stick to bondo. Also, bring a friend that knows about cars or just a friend in general. Two minds work better than one.
