Post

so i traded my 240sx with rb25det for a 1974 datsun 260z and im trying to debate which would be a better swap. with time effort and money available. should i drop a 280zx turbo in it or another rb25det. im in process of putting a r200 rear end swap in it as well right now. give me your opinions. and another question. either way im going to build them it to the point were its just barley street legal. so which would produce better performance im guessing. and i got the 240 h/o head

I am a fan of the L28ET, not to mention in the S30 chassis it's a direct botl in replacement, to swap int he RB involves a good bit of work or expense to buy premade prackets from mckinney, be sure to red though the 2 other RB S30's being built by members right now

....hmmmm. sad to say the L28ET is a bit mroe unique these days

In California, and probably other states that perform emissions testing, the RB swaps can't be smogged because it's an imported engine. Same goes for SR20DET swaps, can't get a legal smog, can't register the car.

One of the guys I know got a ref ticket leaving a sears point event. The CHP took pictures and he had to go to the referee to get his car legal again. He ended up putting his KA back in the car. To be a legal swap here (in a car), the engine has to be equal year or newer, been available in a car, and you have to use all of the emissions devices that were used on that engine for its model year

sure you can drive around in your state.... but its not legal.

if it was never offered here, its not legal; end of story, the thing is most shops arent gonna know what it is so your fine

most of us dont care about that, but it is something to think about, especially with the way the goverment is trying to crack down on emissions etc i think the days of laxed emissions across the board are numbered.

now with a classic car, you can get around it- antique tags etc.

Just wait, in 2010, Cali will be doing emissions tests on diesels! The guys that bought those chips and 4" exhaust are going to be screwed if they sold or junked their stock parts

Going back on topic, engine choice is up to you but it seems like an L28et is an easy swap and there are readily available parts.
