My girl friend and I went to VT for snow mobiling this past weekend and my Rogue was stock in the snow. After several attempt to get out my tires were just spinning at the same spot. I have to have the tour owner drove over his truck to pull me out (thanks to the hook underneath the bumper).

I tried the AWD lock but wasn't sure if it helped. I suppose I should turn off the CVT? or use the manual down shift?

What's the best way to get out of that situation should it happen again?

When you say your tires were spinning, the first thing that comes to mind is perhaps you were using the accelerator too much. When you're stuck in snow, first thing to do is make sure it is even possible to get out (for example, if you are stuck because you tried to drive over a six foot snow pile, you should try to back out not keep going over!). This may require getting out of the car and removing excess snow from around the wheels or undercarriage (you did bring a shovel, right? :-) Unless you have some serious off-road vehicle, spinning your wheels isn't going to get you anywhere and is especially dangerous around corners.

That said, the best method when completely stuck is to move very SLOWLY forward and backward in a rocking motion, braking when you have reached as far back or forward as you can go and/or the wheels spin. Your wheels should be straight if possible. Eventually you will get enough traction and momentum to move the vehicle a bit. Repeat as necessary and be careful if you suddenly get traction and start moving too fast.

I'm sure that locking the AWD can only help, and also using manual low gear. Additionally, dirt, sand, carpet/floor mat, people pushing, weight in the car, etc also help.

Tires make a huge difference as well. And chains are even better.

The manual also suggests to shut off the VDC if the car gets stuck in Snow or Mud. Maybe try that if it happens again, that might help also.

The best idea would be for your girl friend to put on her shoes, get out of the car, and push. Usually works.

You can also take the floor mats out and put them under the stuck tire(s) for traction.

Also, next time try to keep moving. If you stop, then you're likely to get stuck. One time I got my Xterra stuck in deep sand because I was forced to stop by the driver in front of me. So no matter what type of vehicle you're driving if you stop you're much more likely to become stuck.

Turn VDC OFF, AWD Lock ON, EASY on the gas. If you still can't move either direction, time to dig or call of for a tow.

Just out of curiosity, Albert, What brand of tires came on your Rogue?
