When you say your tires were spinning, the first thing that comes to mind is perhaps you were using the accelerator too much. When you're stuck in snow, first thing to do is make sure it is even possible to get out (for example, if you are stuck because you tried to drive over a six foot snow pile, you should try to back out not keep going over!). This may require getting out of the car and removing excess snow from around the wheels or undercarriage (you did bring a shovel, right? :-) Unless you have some serious off-road vehicle, spinning your wheels isn't going to get you anywhere and is especially dangerous around corners.
That said, the best method when completely stuck is to move very SLOWLY forward and backward in a rocking motion, braking when you have reached as far back or forward as you can go and/or the wheels spin. Your wheels should be straight if possible. Eventually you will get enough traction and momentum to move the vehicle a bit. Repeat as necessary and be careful if you suddenly get traction and start moving too fast.
I'm sure that locking the AWD can only help, and also using manual low gear. Additionally, dirt, sand, carpet/floor mat, people pushing, weight in the car, etc also help.
