What should I do before changing from mineral oil to synthetic?

Do I need to flush the engine first?

What about the other fluids (i.e. p/s, p/b) - anything special?

No need to do anything just drain out real well. You can also use up an extra quart before closing the oil pan to rinse out some of the old stuff.

not a bad idea wether u are switching or not.

Fred,

Have you ever heard of running a OW-20 at idle (to flush deposits), and then draining and filling with the syn.?

Check out http://www.envirolution.com . If you want to find a facility that performs this service in your area, give me or Fred an email and we'll give you Tom Mackin's number. I don't have it with me at the moment. Idling with an extra quart of ATF or some BG cleaner just before the change/flush is another method, depending on engine's condition and age (how much depositing).

yes, I have. But no good reason too.

ATF works well, likly better.<If> you are certain your engine is not too badly sludged up feel free to use a hasrh kerosene based flush like CD2 really cleans things out well.

Or use a wynns flush a bit gentler.

But really no need for flush unless your engine is dirty in which case you should go to shorter oil intervals plus idle it with some ATF just right before your oil chngae.

I found the flush removed left over oil in the crancase that would othereise have diluted and contaminated the fill. While it is overkill if you don't have some top end varnish, I am doing it on all my Q45, even the one I have already converted to M1.

Why did you do it, Fred?__________________Brian1995 Q45 & Q45t & 2000 Q45

I have 76k on my J - I am the third owner, and only know that the oil change intervals seem to have been maintained (from the Infiniti service records). I don't know how much sludge might be in the case. But I thought this would be a good time to flush what might be in there. I do not think that the engine should be dirty enough to risk freeing up and circulating any thing too bad. Bad assumption?

Look under your oil filler cap.

if it looks clean under there the engine is clean enough to flush aggressively. ( no warranty implied on my part, just going by what I would risk on my car).

I like the gentle appraoches much discussed here before.Idle with ATF Just before every oil change.

<Or> Envirolution flush.Actually contrary to popular myth, full synthetic oils have less detergents than non syns.To clean an engine non syn oils are better. To keep it from getting dirty in the first place syn oils are much better ( less or no sludge due to better libe stock, less VII's used= less or no varnish)

A good clean-up oil is Valvoline Durablend. In 10w-40 it is actuially ACEA A3 spec'ed,( pretty amazing one of only 2 blends that meets ACEA A3 ( the other one is Schaeffers oil).

I just like to do it on a regular basis to keep stuff clean.

No, No.:nono:

1) Take car with current , soon-to-be changed-oil.2) Add .75 to 1 qt of MOBIL1 Syn ATF3) Idle for 45 min to an hour.4) drain oil and proceed normally with oil change.

Thanks for that "little" correction Fred.

Do you use MOA (or whatever it is called now)? if so w/ each oil change?
