I want to apply tint film to my front windows to match the factory tints in the back as closely as possible. The law in NY is 70% in the front... yeah right I'm not really worried about it though, I know plenty of guys with really blacked out windows that don't get hassled. I thought I'd seen this same topic hashed out a few times before, but I searched the forum and couldn't find a real definitive answer. thanks,-Nick

20%, which is also the legal limit here in Canada! The colour wont match perfectly though, but its not noticeable from outside and barely noticeable inside

thanks Qxxx... how's your nighttime visibility with the 20% tint? Also, anyone have any opinions or experience dealing with this kind of stuff?http://www.amazon.com/Professi...r=8-1

is there a specific type or brand that I should be looking for, or is it all pretty much the same?

I've always used 3M Window Films, best stuff out there to my understanding, no purple or fading/none of that crap. Just make sure not to use window cleaners that contain ammonia.

damn 35%? well if the law ever gives me heck ill just tell them straight up that when i got it installed the limit was 20%. they dont make people with classic cars get seatbelts, so screw them.

as for what kind of tint, i just brought it to the pro's. tint just never turns out perfect when i do it myself. I brought it to this great place in my city, not one bubble anywhere. I plan to go back and get them to do my sunroof.

Night time visibility is decent, i think putting limo tint is insane. My vision is pretty bad at night, so i tend to roll down the window when turning sometimes to make sure. In the winter its fine since the snow makes everything lighter.

You will want to get a tint that is in a charcoal color pallet and not a smoke color pallet.

Charcoal means it is grays to blacks. Smoke has a slight brownish hue.

I believe Llumar brand tint uses the charcoal pallet, but that is just one brand out of many that are out there.

Are you going with a metailized film or ceramic film, the ceramic being the more expensive, but it has better heat reflective properties.

Huber Optic is one brand of ceramic tint.

For anyone interested in applying window tint on your front windows (at least here in the U.S.) I believe it varies by state. But, as I was told by my master tint applicator at the custom shop I frequent, whatever the legal limit is still makes it illegal for you to have the tint on your front windows. Here's why: let's say in Md/Va (like me) the legal limit is 35%. Our windows have a clear solar tint applied from the factory to block out as much UV rays as possible, to the degree of 2-3%. So even if you applied 35% on your front windows, it would end up realistically being 32-33%...thus putting it under the legal limit. But anyways, back to the topic at hand: my window tint on the front is 20% I believe; matches my back windows rather well IMO.

The standard is not uniform across Canada. Each province has it's own standards and regulations.I put 20% tint on my Sentra, and had no problems (Ontario). The car is now registered in Newfoundland, and my son had to remove the tint, or face multiple fines. You should be able to Google each province and find the appropriate standards.
