What the position sensors are doing?

Hi.I have a hard starting problem when the engine is hot. Now I would like to know about the position sensors such as camshaft and crank position sensors. What they are doing? and Can I check them whether they are working good or bad?Thanks.

if they were giving you any trouble, your CEL would be on. if not, then you may have another source of problems.
