no NO no NO no! even leaks as small as a pinhole can make a world of difference on a car that uses a maf! you're getting more air at idle (vaccum sucks it in) than the ECU thinks it has, and under boost, you're loosing air that the ECU thinks is there! fix those leaks immediatly or else your car is gonna run like crap.
your driveablility issues are completely because of the vaccum/boost leak you have. fix that, and you should be good. Bigger intercooler piping will be helpful to a point... too big and you have too much of a pressurized area to fill, but just slightly bigger than stock and fewer curves would help response. I noticed a difference when I put Trust piping on my CA
the heatshield doesn't matter. We have to remove them on LHD cars because it hits the steering shaft, and I've never heard of anyone having issues with it.
