I work in, and have worked in a body shop for the past 8 years. Only single stage paint jobs (cheap enamels or acrylic enamels) need to be left alone to cure. Quality paint jobs involve clear coat, and many of these are now hard in a matter of hours, some of them can even be buffed in 2-4 hours.
When you get a quality paint job, it will include clear coat, and will have been wetsanded(color sanded if you prefer the term), buffed, washed, and sometimes waxed before you get it back. If we paint a car on a Monday, we are wetsanding the clearcoat to make it totally smooth and buffing it on Tuesday, reassemble and deliver on Wednesday. If you can wetsand the clearcoat with no problem, which you should be able to the next day, then washing isn't going to hurt anything.
However, $500 Macco and Earl Shibe, and Facto-Bakes are completely different, and even when they claim they are using and "integrated clearcoat" system, it is not a clearcoat on top of the paint, but instead added to the paint which in effect simply thins the paint. Its a scam to get you to spend a bit more money in hopes of more protection.
As for price, a quality factory type job runs an average of $1500-$1800, Pearls can get into the $2000-$2500 range, and Kandys start at around $4500 due to cost of materials, time involved, and the difficulty involved in spraying them.
