Until the paint is fully cured it will be soft and fragile. There is no way around it. Hard bug hits will leave marks in the paint and anything heavy sitting on the paint will squish it. You can wash it, just DO NOT wax it. In fact, better to not use soap either. DO NOT put a car cover on the car while it is curing either. For a 500$ Earl Shieb I don't know that I would worry to much, but I don't know the qality you are going for.

Dude, that's crap. Get the car painted and drive it.

Any reputable paint shop will use paint that hardens in hours. It can be rinsed off a couple days later (gently). Don't wash with a rag or cloth for a week.

a california duster can become your new best friend. Just dust your car. However, i do not know if the oil in the duster will damage paint (paraffin).

Most of the body shops now days use a paint process that includes a booth with high internal temperatures to speed up the curing process, in effect it actually bakes the paint on the vehicle so it has a much harder external shell, but I would still be cautious.

^ Correct.

It's actually a bad idea to let crap sit on your fresh paint.

Wash it when it's cool, out of the sun, and make sure you use SOFT water (most DIY car-wash booths have a soft watter setting).

From what I've read, after you get a paint job, you're supposed to only rinse the car with water for the first two weeks, then you can start using soap, then after a month you can start waxing. Remove bird crap and bugs as soon as you can with a high pressure water stream. If possible, store it in a garage as much as you can.

Wow....As you all know I just had my car painted and I asked the body guy the same questions...The guy told me that shops that have you wait 30-90 days use CHEAP PAINT. Period. Quality paint will be ready to go from the body shop. Now, I have to admit I was skeptical, but if you see my paint, you would be convinced...The guy basically told me, that if the car is dirty, wash it, its better than having the dirt sit on your new paint...oh yea, he also said PPG is crap.

All depends on the quality. You can get a paint job for well under $500, just don't expect it to last that long, and expect alot of overspray. Then, you can go to the other extreme and pay many thousands of dolars, especially for pearl or candy finishes.

I work in, and have worked in a body shop for the past 8 years. Only single stage paint jobs (cheap enamels or acrylic enamels) need to be left alone to cure. Quality paint jobs involve clear coat, and many of these are now hard in a matter of hours, some of them can even be buffed in 2-4 hours.

When you get a quality paint job, it will include clear coat, and will have been wetsanded(color sanded if you prefer the term), buffed, washed, and sometimes waxed before you get it back. If we paint a car on a Monday, we are wetsanding the clearcoat to make it totally smooth and buffing it on Tuesday, reassemble and deliver on Wednesday. If you can wetsand the clearcoat with no problem, which you should be able to the next day, then washing isn't going to hurt anything.

However, $500 Macco and Earl Shibe, and Facto-Bakes are completely different, and even when they claim they are using and "integrated clearcoat" system, it is not a clearcoat on top of the paint, but instead added to the paint which in effect simply thins the paint. Its a scam to get you to spend a bit more money in hopes of more protection.

As for price, a quality factory type job runs an average of $1500-$1800, Pearls can get into the $2000-$2500 range, and Kandys start at around $4500 due to cost of materials, time involved, and the difficulty involved in spraying them.

whats a good cost for a paint change then? To many red 240's :P. I want to go from red to blue.

The inside doesn't need to be done. Just the outside. Also, what paint do you guys use? No one has said anything on the brand

1500-1800 on average, but I've seen much higher than this from large shops. For a color change, depending on the car, the area of the country, and the size of the shop. Keep one thing in mind, its not the size of the shop thats important, or the number of cars in it, its the quality of the work. I've seen alot of the bigger shops around here charging ALOT more than our shop and putting out work that I wouldn't personally accept. Try to get a look at their CUSTOM work up close, not just in pictures. Most places can do good with insurance work like bumpers/fenders, but when it comes to custom colors and entire paint jobs, they sometimes have problem.

As for paint brands, its really not all that important, just make sure its Basecoat/clearcoat. Dupont, PPG, etc all have several lines of paint and all are good. With an all-over paintjob, the high dollar stuff isn't as important because you aren't trying to match one panel to another, so if there is a slight variation in color, you'd never know when you paint the entire car.

IM me if you want more details or have more questions.
