I just put Tokicos and Eibachs on my 91 Q45a, converting it to standard suspension. But it seems like the rear shocks are way too long. The stem nuts are sitting about 1 1/2" above the top of the spring mount so it is just riding on the springs. The stock #s on the boxes suggest they are the correct parts. What's going on?

Not sure what you mean. Does the strut not move with the spring when it compresses/relaxes?

Right, the struts don't move with the springs(rear only). It seems like the struts are stuck fully extended. They won't compress at all. Weird.

You did use replacement junk yard [or new] standard top seats, rubber doughnut, and caps -------RIGHT. You cannot use any of the oem active parts in the conversion.

Dumb question, Stephen, but you didn't try to reuse the active springs, did you?

I'm using no active parts. I got the springs, struts and stops from Joe and the top mounts are from my 92 parts car.

I pulled off one of the rears and removed the spring. The strut feels like a new one should. But it fully extends when relaxed. I put it back together and of course it is the same as before. I can push down on the stem while installed and the nut will lower right to the top mount. Is there something so obvious that I can't see it?

I attached a photo of the stem from insde the trunk. Thanks.

You have the plate and upper plate installed wrong. See RA18 in FSM.

Thanks, but I don't happen to have an FSM. Can you point me to the diagram or expand on your explanation? I pulled it all apart again and it looks like everything is going together properly, like its the only way to go together. Is there a part that is missing? Thanks.

Well I found the FSM, with help from redman and wes, but I don't see how that differs from the way I have it. It there something else that goes on top of the chassis mount and under the lock nut? Unfortunately, I sold my factory springs off my parts car awhile back and I can't remember how it was. Given that the spring is going to sit where it is, regardless of the position of the strut, how is it going to stop the rising of the piston rod?

Now I found it. I forgot to transfer over the lower plate and bushing that go on the shaft just below the upper mount. I found them still sitting on the old struts from the parts car. On a very brief drive, I noticed that the steering response is very nice now. Cornering is precise, but the back feels a tad soft. Maybe it'll settle some. The lowered stance of the car is just perfect. All in all, I'm happy with it. Thanks to everyone. Tommorrow, it's time to do the alarm install.

I converted, by going from an active 91 to a standard 90. I have standard springs, active F&R sway bars, and Tokico Black front Blue Rear. The shocks now have 40,000 miles.

With this combination, compared to the active, the rear has always seemed floaty to me. I'm just resigned to it.

40,000 miles is way past that as new feeling for shocks.

Put some thin metal washers between the nut and the sway bushing retainer and compress the bushings a little. [4 washers on rear [top and bottom nut] 2 on front since only a bottom nut.

Because of the place where bars couple to suspension arms the bar can only move 1/4" per wheel inch [+- 3/4" total bar movement] ...............a total of 1/8" slack can make a difference........with 8 bushings flopping around each has to have less than 1/64" [0.0156"] slack.
