I recently bought a set of HKS springs for my s14, and I'm trying to find a good strut to pair them up with. The springs lower roughly 1.7" up front and 0.5" in the rear. From all the posts i have read through the search, it seems that the front drop will destroy Tokico hp's and probably KYB AGX's as well. Is koni my only alternative? What do you guys think?

Here are the lowering and spring rates that were listed if it helps any: Front Lowering by 43mm and rear by 13mm. Front spring rate is 4.02 kg/mm and rear 2.21kg/mm

i'll keep an eye out for a set... but they are pretty hard to come by in the U.S. right?Any clue how long a set of tokico's would last at that drop?Would like to replace the springs/strut combo kinda soon :-/

Ummm who ever told you that a 1.7inch drop will "destroy" tokico's or kyb agx's is crazy. I had a 2.5-2.75 inch drop on kyb agx's

I was thinking about getting some RS-R down springs but I don't think any struts could take that drop.

When I did a search for struts... there were quite a few posts about people's tokico's not lasting too long with eibach sportlinesPlus I had a old prelude with neuspeed race springs (~2.25" drop) with tokico HP's that didn't last a year hardly. I'm tempted to get a set just to see how long they will last with the HKS springs... but then again, thats 300 bones i could put tward something else.

I don't know about KYB's first hand, all i know is what the little search button tells me

Kyb doesn't recommend using springs below a 1.5" drop. However, everyone will have different results. Some people will tell you that their struts are completely fine with a 2+ inch drop. All I can say is that it voids your warranty on the agx and they will tell you that you run a risk of seriously shortening the life of the strut.

Gab superstrokes (same as buzz specs) and konis for sure.

I doubt the AGX's will give you a problem though...I mean, it's only a .2" difference.

I'm wondering if people are using boots on their struts. I didn't, which i think contributed to the accelerated wear of my struts, which are tokico blues. my car is only lowered only about 1.5in f/r. But then again i'm in the bay area and most of the roads suck.

Boots are always a good idea. A pitted strut piston will eventually lead to a blown strut. The KYB boots are only $11-12 each...I know I'll be getting a set when I get my AGX's.

I couldn't use boots with my ground controls...they wouldn't fit. We'll see how long mine last.

trigger what kind of coil overs you have, bc 240's have little front wheel travel as it is. ANd w/a 3in drop on sleeve coil overs and OE style struts you must have an inch or less of travel??

Underdamped set up tends to shorten the life of struts. Droping your car with short srpings plus regular type of shock , you don't really have much compression travel left, which means you might bottom out a lot, thus blow your shocks over short period of time.

If you don't really drive hard, I would think it would last for a while, however if you drive hard enough. Soon you will get a blown shocks.

My experince is get something could provide better damper such as KYB AGX, Tokico HTS or just go with Coilover which in general is a short stroke design. A short stroke design ensures your compression travel while you could slam your car down. You will be suprised with ride comfort from true coilover with high rate spring. It's not that bad as opposite to short springs with regular type of shocks.

PS: you get what you pay for really !!

just my thought.

I got them last year in about march and they lasted up til maybe a month or two ago- I wasnt sure if they were blown 2 months ago, but now I am certain. Could springs of the wrong rate accerlerate wear also? Lets say a softer spring mated with a strut designed for stiffer rates.

i used aerospeed coilovers. I didn't get the lower that i wanted so i just took the bottom adjustable part out and got a 3 inch drop. I am going to raise it up again because it sucks having to slow down for every little rock in the road.
