What is the size of the exhaust manifold bolts on an 89 240 SOHC? Thanks

Ok, found the size for the studs, so the next question is can I use bolts instead?

Using bolts isnt a good idea at all, bolts will back out and cause you all kinds of problems. If its just one broken stud or something your having problems with i GUESS if you really wanted to be half assed you could use a bolt. Again, thats being half assed and it will be a weak link in your motor and will probably bite you in the ***.

The studs are 3-4 dollars from a Nissan dealer.

I'm not sure if they are broken off or backed out all the way. The heat shield is still in the way. If they are just gone, can I install the new studs while the manifold is on the car, or does it need to be removed? Thanks

It would be really difficult(if not impossible) to get the stud all the way into the head with the manifold on. If you want to try to do it that way, you MUST chase the threads into the head with a tap/dye set. Its the only way you will ever be able to get the stud all the way in there without risking damage to the threads. As i have found, the threads that go into the head for the studs will distort causing you to need to use excessive force to install them. If you chase the threads out, you should have no problems finger tightening the stud all the way into the head.
