I managed to break my Torx bit on the cam bearing bolt I forgot what size bit it is.

I thought it was a T10 but I'm very unsure.

Should be a T30. Mine came out very easily with a QUALITY torx bit adapted to my 1/2" impact. Tried it manually and could feel strippage immediately. Tried cheap torx and broke off the head as well. Even quality torx was twizzlered when i was done.

No, maybe it was a T45...

Another trick that helped me avoid stripping them out was to put the torx bit and 1/2" adaptor into the bolt head, then tap them in with a hammer to make sure the bit is as deep into the bolt as it can be. Then slide the impact gun in and take it out.

I know it sounds redundant, but it really helped, especially with those heads that have a lot of sludge buildup around the cam caps.

Why would any part of head have sludge build up if you follow 90 day oil change interval..................a tiny bit of varnish maybe but nothing more.

The oil that was in my head bolt galleys smelled skunky. Like old Heineken skunky with a tinge of burnt gear lube. And was thick like the day is long.

Twas a dark and stormy night...

Hey viewers,

I happened to find this thread because I am currently in the process of tearing down my '91 VH45. Camshaft covers are off and am having difficulty removing those T30 torx bolts (yes, they are DEFINITELY T30s). I have gone through two so far. Will try an electric impact wrench next.

You wouldn't be silly to replace them with hex bolts from another nissan motor. I've got a brand new set to fit to my VH... **** the torx screws tbh!

A quality T30, 3/8 to 1/2 adaptor and 1/2" impact worked for me.

G'day Mettler. Hey where'd you pick up you new set from if I might ask? How much did they charge, since there's 48 of 'em?

In the end, I dremelled slots into the torx and had to use an impact wrench with a different attachments.

Haha yep, that's what I ended up having to do to a couple of them. SR20 cam cap bolts I think I have, they were cheap enough from my local nissan dealer.
