gasjen,Oil around the valve cover is not a huge deal. It probably means that the valve cover gasket needs replaced. I would inspect the following things.1. Air filter and box2. Spark plugs and wires3. Brake booster (make sure there is not leaking of fluid)4. Radiator and hoses (make sure they are not cracked or leaking5. Check the oil level and color. 6. Ask the buy for any service records he/she may have.7. I would inspect the area around the engine block and get under the car and look at the driveline and transmission. Look for leaks and any visible damage to parts. You may not be able to find specific deficiencies, but the condition at which the car was kept will tell you how it was driven and maintained.
If you can, take the car to a trusted mechanic before you buy the car. The mechanic will be able to diagnose problems and advise you about the car. If the seller will not allow you to take the car to a mechanic to get it tested, don’t buy the car. I find it funny that people will get a home inspection before they buy a house, but wont get an inspection for a car they are potentially buying. Typically cars are your 2nd major purchase in life.
