What should I do with my messed up KA24E???

Information on the naturally-aspirated KA24E and KA24DE engines.

I am waiting for my SR swap right now and I have a KA24e (89) with low compression on the third cylinder. Is this engine just trash now or can I rebuild it. I have not torn it appart to really know what has caused this since I was allready negotiating my swap.

In the end I am hoping that this engine is fixable so that I can rebuild it. I have never rebuilt an engine before and the experience appeals to me.

If it is dead then may it rest in peace, or peices. Whatever.

I don't know too much first hand about engines, that is why I am having someone else do my swap for me. I just figured this might be a good way to learn.

Thanks in advance.:help

it's the best way to learn. buy an FSM and go for it. building an engine is intimidating until you actually do it.

Absolutely 100% agreed. I had NEVER seen the insides of an engine (except drawings or diagrams) before i yanked mine out. Best advice i can give is label everything: engine harness connections, vacuum hose connections, keep bolts in labeled zip lock bags so you dont have any leftovers. It really makes it easy putting it all back together (in my case 4 months later). Just dont force anything! A hammer is not a tool you need to rebuild your engine with!

For those who dont know, i installed my distributor wrong and 'made it fit', completely destroying the crank angle sensor in the process, then had to wait another 2 weeks while i located and bought a used distributor. So be gentle!

What is a FSM? I have seen this elsewhere and never figured out the abbreviation.

Thanks though, I am sure now that I will rebuild it. Still, hoping that I won't just do this for the heck of it. I would like it to work in the end. Any notions as to wether it will run afterwards??

F actory S ervice M anual. The best place to buy one seems to be eBay... at least from what I have found.

hehe...that's all up to you.

my first engine rebuild was a perkins diesel. i had no clue as to what the hell i was doing. i took my time and paid attention to what i was doing, and the thing is still running after 4 years.

or you could trade the engine to a junkyard and make a few $$ towards your new engine... just kiding its prolly just a bad set of piston rings or out-of-spec cylinder. not too hard to fix. If you have any kind of mechanical inclination and a few tools it wont take too much to get the engine apart. Getting it back together might be what you need the fsm for (unless you label everything like whats-his-face said). I say go for it and you might learn something.

I think a KA24E turbo in a datsun 510, not s10 would rule. not trying to bust your balls, but datsun never made an s10, unless your talking about the late 70's silvia/200sx, chassis number was s10, but those things are DOG UGLY! I dont know about putting the motor in a 240 or 280Z, thats sacreligious! a 4 cyl in a 6 cyl car! especially when a L28ET can make 400HP on the stock, 20yr old bottom end. I think it would be cool to see a turbo KA in an old datsun 620 or 521 pickup, those things are light as hell, redily available and they look pretty damn cool, in my opinion, anyway, lol

peace
