First of all i am new here and do know my way around engines just not nissans. I have just aquired a 95 240sx with auto trans for a steal of a price (atleast I think so because I have always wanted one of these cars). The problem is that I am told the motor needs to be replaced but was wondering if there are some things i should check before I run out and get a new one. The car has 82xxx original miles and is a one owner female driven car and the body and interior are in great condition. The owner tells me that she was driving one day and the check engine light came on and the car just cut off and stopped working and hasn't started since. According to her mechanic it needs a motor but I am not so sure because he quoted her $1800 for a used replacement. Is there any common problems that could cause this to happen and possible easy fixes?

Thanks,

Nick

I think that's the sheistiest mechanic on the planet.

Did he even run any tests on it? First, check for fuel, then check for spark. Does the engine crank? You can read the code off the ECU with a reader they'll have that you can use for free at autozone. Then do a compression test (assuming it cranks). You would have to have one massive lemon of an engine to need a replacement at 82,000.

As soon as I get the car home ill start getting into it and checking all the things you suggested. yeah I figured the mechanic was probably being a jerk.
