What should a s13 KA thermostat open at?

What temp. should a s13 KA-D thermostat open at? I thought mine was bad because my car showed all the symptoms, took it out, refilled and bled the coolant system, and it ran fine without one in so I assumed that the thermostat was the problem. Took it inside, put a meat thermometer in a pot of water, dropped in the thermo and turned on the burner. The thermo opened at around 180 degrees F. That seems normal to me? Maybe my cooling problem before was because there was air in the system?

well i don't know what simptoms you mean but when i changed my top radiator hose, i forgot to take out the air releif bolt. so there was air in the system. that caused the gauge to go right up, even though it wasn't verry hot. so i then did a coolant system flush and then did every thing correctly. now it runs cooler than before all the drama.

180 is normal.

I had a problem with overheating to. It end up being the new thermostat. Sure I did the same thing put it in a pot hot water and watched it open up but it didn`t open up all the way. I bought another one from a different store and it open all the way. Dam cheap parts.

The stock thermostat is rated at 170 degrees, so 180 is probably acceptable.

180 is where a stock nissan thermo opens, or so says my autometer gauge.

Ok, FSM says 170 is where it begins to open (thermostat ratings are for the temp it begins to open at), and fully open is at 194 with a opening of 0.31 inch.
