My 98 started missing while I was driving to work yesterday and then the MIL light came on. I go to Auto Zone to get my code checked and get a P0306 which indicates a cylinder #6 misfire. I buy plugs and wires, cap and rotor and hope for the best. If any of you have taken on this task before you know it's not the easiest plug change. I finally get to the #6 plug and get it out. I think I found the problem. My mom was the original owner of this suv and payed good money to have the tune up done a little over a year ago:(

Methinks someone got frustrated and just gave up on that #6 plug. I'd be furious at the garage that did that.

If any other Pathy owners with this engine takes it to a garage that doesn't specialize in Nissan vehicles, I'd suggest taking out the plug tool from under the seat, putting a post-it on it telling them to use the tool, and leave it on the drivers seat.

Glad I don't have this gen of Pathy.

Plug #6 is a royal PITA. But that is not the only problem. Problem #2 - Bosch plugs. If you want your pathy to run right, use only NGK plugs, or maybe Denso's. But NEVER Bosch or Champion or any other domestic brand.

It's not that hard to get #6 out as long as you use the tools the Pathy came with

Honestly I dont see why its such a pain. Get a mirror, 2 6" extentions and a wobble and the spark plug socket. the mirror is just so you can stick the new plug in the hole with out having to feel around. But ive done it soo many times now i suppose.

aww man that sucks.........

yeah changing plus on the pathfinders suck balls!

i changed mine just a couple month ago on my 01 pathy and i had to rip the intake and throttle body off the engine to get to number 4 and 6. then...i end up forgetting to plug coil number 2 back in and drove on 5 cylinders for like a mile( no wonder it was so rough) that end of screwing up my coil flooding my cylinder and ruiined my maf sensore. urrrr. so stupid!

i fixed it all. replace the maf with the maxima maf. and ordered coil from advance and check engine light went off after a week and its been a month now no check engine!! surprisingly my cat and o2 sensors are good? wierd. . thank god for nico. you saved me 500 dollars so far!

If I hadn't read on here and in the owner's manual about the tools in the car, it would have been a pain. The biggest pain was getting my big fat arse up in the engine compartment so I could reach it.

I agree. A shop should know this or have access to the information, anyway.

UPDATE:

Just wanted know that the shop was kind enough to refund my mom the full amount of the tune-up they performed. She had to get right with them a little bit after they wanted to refund only the one plug that they missed, but she made them see otherwise. She said the manager said "that obviously it only a full refund was going to make her happy". No sh@t!

jap cars dont run right on bsch plugs, trust me i had to learn the hard way

i seen brand new bosch on the dyno, actually lose horsepower. the dude said "put my old plugs back in" and his used NGK plugs back in and gained back the lost 2 horsepower!

on top of that, i had bosch plugs fail in both jap cars ive ever installed in....

keep jap wit jap

So Bosch IR Fusions may not be the best for a 98 QX4 then right?

I think it comes down to running what the factory engineers used when theytweaked it on the dyno. For Nissans, that means NGKs. For Porches and BMWsit may well be Bosch. For Corvettes, Delco.

the worst!! leave em in if you already got em... but when your engine starts shaking violently and then the check engine lights up, stop driving immediately and change back to NGK
