So I pulled the front left tire to start cleaning the old undercoat off, fix some rust spots and re-undercoat it and when I was taking the wheel off I noticed it only had 3 lug nuts......ok. so I pull the wheel off and just happened to bump the lug that didn't have a nut on it with my hand, and it pushed in about 3/4".

I can grab it with my finger tips and pull it in and out constantly, and I can't really screw a new lug nut on it because every time I try to screw it on the lug starts to slide in. What's causing this and how do I fix it? I was maybe thinking about going 5-lug down the line but I have a lot of things that are ahead of it on my to-do list.

This is probably a newbie question but I've just gotten into working on cars and this 240 is the first car I've done heavy work on.

If you can hold it in place from behind then just do that while you thread the lug nut. If you don't plan on every getting longer studs you can tack weld it on so it doesn't move. Does it spin also, or just move in and out. If it just moves in/out, then you're fine, but if it also spins your best bet is to tack it.

the stud is pressed in the hub from behind.

A: pull hub take hammer pound back in

B: turn wheel to lock (with wheel off) take hammer pound back in

hope this helps

if your able to pull the studs in and out of the hub with your bare hands... that's not good at all. Hopefully you just have a stripped stud (the teeth part) or a wrong sized stud in place, otherwise you may have a rounded out hub. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO STILL USE THAT STUD TO PUT YOUR WHEEL ON! Otherwise, if you try to take your wheel off again and the stud spins along with the lugnut, you're not gonna have fun trying to take it off.

It doesn't spin, it just pulls in and out, and won't pull out as far as the other studs, so I don't think it's rounded out. I was going to pull it today but I ended up taking a 3 hour nap after school and I'm about to leave for practice so I don't have time.

Do you have to remove the caliper or anything to get to the studs, I suppose I could find out for myself, since I haven't looked hard at it yet, but I'm going out there right now to fix it and I was wondering what all it entails, I presume it's an easy job as long as I have a replacement stud.
