30 plus for me, man . . . and I agree . . . but is this vegan thing something new or was it a "precondition"? We don't know all the ins and outs and . . . but the "happy wife happy life" adage works. Is it a hill do die on/an issue worth harming harmony?

let's face it: our women usually get their way eventually anyway, so maybe negotiation is indeed the way to go.

Again the issue is that she won't drive the car with a leather steering wheel, and if he wants the pick-up truck he has to make her happy.

Aren't you glad you have all of us armchair psychologist/marriage counselors here, IM?

Coffee + Nostrils.....You owe me a new keyboard!

I think the leather is attached using a glue made from baby seal cartilage. You're gonna' need a beaver tooth scraper to remove it.

Kidding aside....If it makes her feel better just do what she wants and peel the offending material off the steering wheel. Then go get her a nice puffy vinyl steering wheel cover. DO NOT buy any of the furry ones. Then go get your truck and enjoy.

Tell your wife, that a 325lb guy found out she was refusing to drive your car due a leather steering wheel, so he is now going to easily double his beef intake. Ill gladly do it.

Yes, I weigh 325, and yes i can easily eat more meat then I already do.

Wow this has gotten way off topic. Check with a dealer or do a search and see if there are vinyl steering wheel replacements out there. It may cost a little more but it'll look better than just ripping the leather off.

Can I eat your steerigwheel, im hungry. All youll need is a new wheel. OR you can just put on one of those steeringwheel covers, glue it together really tight and neat and no one will ever know.

Thanks to everyone for your thoughts on this. I didn't mean for it to become the philosophical discussion that it has.My wife has been a vegan for 28 years. She eats no meat, fish, dairy or eggs. She won't wear leather, wool, or silk. She spends musch of her time doing foster work for local animal adoption organizations.Every car she's ever owned has had no leather on it. She has chosen lesser model vehicles specifically for this reason even though we could afford higher line models.I support her competely in her decisions and have no problem with any of them. Her life, her beliefs. That she has chosen to live her life with me is my privelege.Having said all of that, the question still remains. What's under the leather?

The leather on the steering wheel IS leather, but it is synthetic leather - NOT animal based.

No, synthetic cows (officially known as "Mootronicus Syntheticus") are built in Naugaville, Pennsylvania (same town the Naugas are from; their skins are used in Naugahyde). Synthetic cows give no milk; they give 5w30 motor oil. Their meat is mostly foam rubber and silicone.

underneath the leather on my old 240 it was basically strenghtened foam on top of a small metal rim. the leather had been coming off for years. i kinda like the way it looked.. used and ragged like the way all good madmax cars should look.

but if your wanting a quick fix.. that foam under the leather, i'm sure would be fine with a small coating of urethane or clear sealant.

or like the other guys said, get yourself a made urythane one and just trade em up. but i'm guessing you're wanting to get rid of the covering, not the stock steering wheel and volume control stuff.

so back to ripping it off, and just sealing the hardened foam with some clear covering.

or when you cut the leather off, put on an aftermarket cover to she's still got good grip. *the ones you tie around it*

Ok..I personally see one thing wrong with this....while killing cows for leather and killing silk worms for silk no animals are harmed while shearing sheep for wool, in fact it's pretty much a natural thing because in the summer it gets too hot for them to be wearing all that extra fur, same reason I get my dog groomed in the summer.

This has gone far enough.

Best be would be to swap with someone who has an "S" steering wheel. But can't recommend ruining a leather steering wheel by ripping it all off.
