I have a question. As I have mentioned elsewhere in this forum, I am looking for a daily driver that I can take to the track. I would like to try my hand at the big three: drag, drift, and autocross. My question is this:

Will a roll cage be absolutely necessary to pass through the gates of the track, or can I run with the top up and be okay? Specifically for the drag strip, what are the general rules on running verts?

Okay, last question. I noticed that roll cages are around 500 bucks or so. What are the costs associated with a cage install? Are they drill/bolt ins, or will I need to have them welded in? Will I need a new top?

search. I know I've personally covered a few of these issues (drift & autocross) several times - search for "roll bar" on this sub forum.

really depends on event venue - short briefing:

drag - no clue, but I don't think a roll bar/cage is required unless you start getting quite lower - I never got into drag tho, so I don't know for sure.

drift - depends on if you are doing it at a major track (yes) or parking lot (no, most of the time) - check w/ the people you want to run with.

autocross - you don't need one.

But seriously, this has been covered a lot - on here & google.

you are going to want to check with your local SCCA or NASA (sp?) rules and regulations.

They are usually the same nationwide, but going to a local Speedway would be your best way. You can usually find local SCCA/NASA sponsored forums for Autocross and Drift on the internet.

The people on those forums will know a bit more about the specifications required.

Whoever said you don't need a cage for Auto X might be mis-informed. Either way, whether it is "required" or not, adding a roll cage to the chassis of the s13 vert will basically help it slice through corners like a hot knife through butter instead of behaving like a wet noodle in boiling water, if you get my drift. Hah...

I meant "need" as in "required". Not "need" as in "recommended". Even then, I don't recommend roll bars for people who mostly daily drive their verts & are barely getting into autocross (aka less than 2 years). And the OP asked about getting past the gate/tech, not about handling.

I run autocross in my vert. Roll CAGES are not required in any class. Roll BARS are only required once you hit MOD class.

As much as a roll bar helps (I have one & love it), there are so many more things you can do to prep your vehicle for autocross before you even really need to take a drastic step such as welding in a roll bar.

The SR Swap will put me into MOD class, at least that's the way I read the rules....right?

I meant mod as in D-MOD or XP-MOD; XP-MOD, convertibles need roll bars for sure - d-mod I'm not certain 100%. You are in Street MOD. Sorry I wasn't clear, but if you read the SCCA Rule book, it states everything in there.
