Lola, My 94 has started making a noise in the passenger side valve cover. I thought it was the A/C clutch at first, then decided it is coming from the rocker cover. I was going to tear into it this weekend and see if it is a cam or rocker arm. I am afraid it might be the guides coming apart.

The car has 206,000 Amsoil and Mobile 1 synthetic motor oil miles on it so it should not be having motor troubles.

I jsut finished re-painting the front and rear bumpers and am in the process of painting and blending in the leading edge of the hood, but put it on the back burner for now.

If it is the chain guides or there is something other major wrong, Lola might be getting an LS2/Richmond 6-speed swap...

Anyway, can someone give me an idea what the going price is for the chain guides?

Thanks,

Look at I.O.S website, they sell a "kit" for this repair. I question your diagnosis, as I would think if you were having guide issues, you would hear the noise from the front engine cover area, not the valve cover area?????

Jeff- what is the last 4 of your VIN, or production date? I've not heard of a '94 ever needing guides.
maybe exhaust leak and or collapsed HLA and or sticky intake valve?

I agree as that is 100 times more likely.

The last 6 #'s of the VIN are 265100.

What is involved in replacing a Hydraulic Lash Adjuster? I assume it is prety straight forward, but I have never removed the rocer assembly from a Q. I guess it is not much different than other Nissan DOHC motors.

I am hoping that this is the issue.

Thanks!

I can remember Dennis mentioning one instance of a 94+ having a guide issue. The "plastic" face of the metal backed guide had separated... Very very rare. In my experience HLA noise is a very distinct "tap, tap, tap" at idle that increases with engine speed.

You have one of the last '94's produced. that would make chain guides extremely remote.
if you pull the VC, then you can check for collapsed HLA (imperfect test with no oil pressure, but try it) by seeing how far you can push in the plunger when the valve is closed--should be quite difficult.
they should be zero clearance, so if you have a really loose one with valve closed--not a good sign.
you have to slip the rocker arm (actually a roller-follower) from under the cam and off the HLA. to do that you will need to loosen the cam bearings.

maybe run a can of BG44K first (sticky intake valve)?
