Ok maybe I used the wrong words. Its very tough for another racing series to move in when one is gobbling up all the air time and sponsership in this country.

Out of curiosity, who is Tony George?

The EGO that runs Indianapolis Motor Speedway. He got fed up with the lack of red-meat eating Americans racin in his Indy 500, so he created a segmentation ... IRL and CART. Neither has enough to build it's own following. That's what I was talking about.

I did a Google search for - Tony George killed racing - this was the first result returned.

<that was more than my 2 cents>

the big thing i like about nascar, and one of the few reasons i watch is to see the logistics involved in the game. there's some good thought in it, but the game itself is boring. why do you think the announcers talk ALL the time? I do admit though, that Rockingham was a good race this year. The last couple of laps where Kahne nearly took the race from Kenseth was priceless.

One could compare it to a game of chess..

But that goes for all racing series where everything is distilled and perfected, and all that is left is the execution of the plan. This makes it driver vs. driver. One crew chief's pit stop plan vs. another.

i honestly get bored watching any type of racing, though. I watched Speed Channel's 24 hours of the valvoline runoffs, and got fairly bored after a while. The same happened with me and Dakar rally, and I was all psyked up for that.

Admittedly, you have to know alot of what makes the difference...

Unless you know what constitutes "offside" (two different types) or "icing" then you can't understand hockey.

I understand making tires last, quick pit stops and drafting because they are standard to practically every form of racing. I just find the ancient technology in NASCAR boring. There can be some decent competition but where is the daring to outbrake someone into a corner? I find the NASCAR track events interesting but the ovals, especially the really short ovals, make me want to do something really exciting like painting the garage.

C'mon! F1 cars are turning 18K rpm!

The only race worth watching in the Nascar series is the Watkins Glenn. The only road course they race on. Why? Cause I was once wathcing it with a friend and we were amazed that each lap there were about 4 or 5 cars going off the track. It was funny as hell, guess making all those left turns becomes a tough habit to break. I'd rather watch the Speed GT Touring with the Audis and NSX and Corvettes, now that is fun.

I think it's insanely boring. The only thing stock on the cars are the frame. Everything else is that tear away fiber glass for the body. My brother got do drive one at a racing class at Texas Motor Speedway. After he ran the track and got out he goes, "That's a fast car but that was pretty lame." He's got a video of it and it's frocken boring. Just the whole sport is like homework or something. F1 or Trans Am races are bad a$$. Stock Ferarris, Lotus', SS', and C-5's duking it is just unreal. Le Mans is bad a$$ although i can't say i've ever watched a whole one. Something about a Saleen S-7 being raped on the track makes my pants happy. I usually just pick a driver and watch their segment, or the highlighted condensed version wich is still about 4hours long.Super Bike and Super stock is bad A$$. Those riders got some balls to barrel a$$ into a corner, rear end sliding out an inch hear and there, pooring through the corner at 60mph only to stomp on the throttle on the way out and kick that rear tire to the edge of it's traction limits. TOO SWEET. That's just my opinion, <<tom>>

I actually think that there are 2 road races. Sears Point and Watkins Glenn.

You're correct. Problem with NASCAR's Glen event is they only use part of the track. I'm not a big NASCAR fan but I can appreciate the skill involved driving 200 mph in heavy traffic. But oval racing is boring to watch.

1) You're right, I don't understand and that's as much a function of me not wanting to, as it' never "interested" me enough to learn. But I only give my close friends a hard time about it, cause it's fun busting their chops :D - Do/watch what makes ya happy.

2) Sorry for my vague statement, but I was referring to how some teams set up for short runs and expect to either get out front and hope they can hold their lead as the tires/set up fades. While others set up for the longer runs hoping cautions want slow the filed and allow the other guys to get fresh tires every 30-5 laps.

3) You have a point there, that's higher than race bikes

Are they still using the stock frame? I would have thought they would be allowed to go with an entire tube chasis by now... for safety reasons if nothing else.

And I thought at least the Dodge cars were unibody anyway... kinda hard to strip THAT down to its frame.

Hey guys- Check out some SCCA races. Usually not to far away from most of us, the different class set ups let almost any type of car run, and our cars do pretty well. 240z's run well in ITS, 240sx do it in ITA. The modified classes, GT-1,2,3 and -4 involve just about any of the interesting cars, fully modified. You can easily find a team that will appreciate your help, and being a crewman is a lot of fun. Heck, I got to well known as a pit cook!! Almost NO press coverage. I really don't understand that. Check out their web site and find out what is local. Beats the hell out of Nascar, and you can get right in on the action. Cheap, too. Of course, if you want to build your own race car, that's a little more expensive.
