Tomorrow I take delivery of my 1992 240sx coupe. I am very excited because I have wanted to do an S13 project for the past 4 years or so.

One major reason I picked this particular car to start on is how amazingly straight all of the body panels are. Also, its relatively low milage (130,000).

Until I can afford the SR20DET and begin major modifications, I would like to get the paint stripped and primed. The original paint is Dark Green. Normally I wouldn't worry about it right now, but the previous owner had tested out some paint strippers on the left side of the car, leaving some big white spots.

He recommended some spray paint stripper called "bulldog", saying you just spray it on and scrape off the paint. Is this stuff very good? Can somebody recommend me something better? One more thing, is there any particular tape that repels paint stripper? The last thing I want to deal with is resealing all of my windows.

Also, there is rust on the roof, due to poor water seals around the sunroof. What’s the best way to get rid of that rust? I plan on using a sander for the surface stuff, and bondo for the deeper stuff.

Thank you for the advice, Nico will be my new home for a loong time.

for the paint stripper, i know brake fluid works ( kind of kidding but it does remove paint.)

for the rust, sand and bondo it. keep using finer grit untill you cant feel the bondo anymore. close your eyes and run your hand over the area. if you can feel were the bondo is, you need to sand more.

thanks for the good advice man.

Also, I have a plethora of tools available to me, because my dad owns a woodworking company (him and I work about 50-60 hours a week, plus i work a second job and am about to start a third). So if anyone knows any shortcuts that use power tools or odd tools, please let me know.

bondo only hides rust, it doesnt fix/solve it. the proper way to get rid of all the rust is to sand blast it or grind/sand it. then treat the metal, prime, paint, yada yada... also, you dont have to strip the paint all the way down to bare metal. just sand it down to the factory sealer or base coat and you can spray right over that. theres no sense in stripping every panel down to the bare metal to repaint it unless there are many many layers of paint on it. and since you dont need to strip everything down, then dont worry bout finding the tape (im sure you could figure that one out though ;) ) no, i dont know of any tape btw.

you probobly wont be using any power tools, just sand the rust away and then bondo it and sand it. you will probobly end up using 2000 grit or finer as the last step. you want it to be smooth.

duct tape may work

theres a spraypaint that turns rust into black primer... you can porbably get away with using that on the rust but take out the headliner you will see more rust there...

for rust, try using rustwort that stuff's pretty corrosive and will bleach your driveway if you spill some. bondo's a bad idea to get rid or hide rust since bondo likes to hold water. if you use bondo, get rid of the rot first, bondo, primer, then clearcoat.

I've been looking for a paint stripper too, I don't want to fork over what people are asking for a sandblast job on my valvecover so yeah. I think gasket remover from napa is supposed to take paint off, but dunno how effective it is.

depending on the sevarity of the rust there are several diffferent methods if there is only surface rust light sanding and matal treatment will work if you have severe rust then you will need to remove the metal area that is infected and weld in a new peice! make sure you remove all the paint before using bondo (i recommend fiberglass) if you do not remove all the rust and just fill over with bondo in about 6 months you will see rust coming through you new paint job! there are several different types of metal treatment on the market i have used several and i dont have a preferance just make sure you read the directions and do it right the first time! good luck!

P.S. i ****ing hate RUST!
