well, so here it is, but it's not just another question about which is the best engine to swap.. this is the result of a failed search attempt. So before you go nuts, take a deep breath, relax, and have your morning coffee first.

If anyone is interested, what i'm looking for is actual weight displacement results from the following swaps:

ca18detsr20detrb20det

Im considering swapping out my ka24de, and what im looking for is the best engine out of the "affordable" 3 that are listed.

The sr20DE is out, b/c of lack of aftermarket support such as a header. it's really what i want, mated to an s15 6 speed, but i cannot find a header for it, and its also quite rare.

So, i've grown quite tired f reading endless posts of engine swapping with a bunch of BS and no results, i'm hoping to find some folks who know which is the most balanced engine. you're probably asking yourself, if the emphasis is on balance, then why throw the rb in the lineup? well, from what i've seen on a few open course run vids, the rb20det seems to be alright in terms of handling, but i dont want a setup with lots of weight up front and nothing in the rear, im trying to come as close to 50/50 as possible. but with the low price of the rb, seems like i could deal with it.

IF anyone has any true weight displacement results of interest pertainig to the swaps listed, please post them. the type of driving is auto-x or the touge. the touge as in crossing the mountain pass not parking lot fanboy toe-gay action.

ANY engine tuned (properly) for it's purpose will be as you call... "the best" although there really isn't any one specific. :| it's not the engine itself. it's the way it's set up :D

The best engine for autocross would be a VH. Low end power, flat torque curve and no turbo to spool up. And it only weighs like 80 pounds more than an SR20.

it has a lot more to do w/ the driver & the tires than ka vs sr vs rb vs vh vs whatever.

I can tell you the fastest 240 on street tires in our local autox region is running an n/a ka. It's a pretty heavily modified n/a ka, but still n/a, nonetheless.

Also if you want to build for autox, you have to know what class you want to be in & build for. As soon as you swap engines, you're automatically in SM (Street Modified). If you don't have the proper supporting mods, you're basically screwed. If you already have the proper suspension, etc - by all means, go balls out w/ whatever you want to do.

That being said, I personally run a ka24de-t. My friends run sr20det's. We all run very close lap times. The differences are more in the drivers than ka vs sr, etc.

Touge, lol - the best "touge" driver I know in this area can keep up and beat the vast majority of the jokers who go up in the area w/ a stock civic on stock suspension and sticky tires.

i started playing on the touge w an eg hatch..you can do some s*** w a civic.

well, basically i was using auto-x as an example, b/c honestly im not interested in auto-x, just that the tight corners present an ideal comparison to real corners where i would need my better weight distribution.

driver definately makes the difference in vehicle control, but when you realize your pushing the machine beyond its nominal lmits then you know you are placing greater stress on weaker components, and what you want the vehicle to do vs what it can do, is when upgrading parts comes into consideration.

the ka24de is a nice engine, and i like the sound of it when it opens up, sounds really good. id be happy w one that puts out 170 to the wheel. however, the ka24de has harmonic issues, and it wasnt desgned to go beyond its limits in terms of balance. although the bugs can be almost worked out w the balance, and it has strong internals, and OIL SQUIRTERS in the block, which imho makes it subject to n/a modding and light boost only. afaik, the ka24de never got the same attention and rigerous testing that was involved with the making of the sr20det, or the ca18det, or rb. its a good engine, for lightly powered daily driver apps. sure they can be built to the hilt, but they dont last..

i dont have much money, at all really. im looking for the best hack. the more plug and play it is, the better, bc that makres it more practical.

from what you guys are saying, its almost as if i should keep using the ka, and learn how to drive my car better, but out of all the cars i have owned, (eg hatch, corolla gt-s w/smallport, eg coupe) i like the s13 the best. if i can assasinate turns like i could w the civic(s) without the a** breaking loose, ill be happy.

i can say that it feels as if i could control my mahcine ans make it feel more like what i want, if my engine was either lighter or closer to the firewall. im in a coupe. if i was in a hatch i wouldnt much mind the bigger engine up front. im pretty sure all that glass adds a bit of weight back there.

ill look into the vh, but i rele hate v6's though.
