Working on my daughter's '04 Quest to get it ready to sell, I broke the oval center console into a couple of pieces. The thing was broken already by a previous owner (the vertical center piece between the vents and one place where the top 'bow' meets the bottom section), so I was attempting to get it out and fix it. I had the upper section out and found the PO had also busted off the screw mounts on the backside too. I figured it would be easier to pull the whole console faceplate and repair it off the dash. When I was disconnecting the wire connectors on back, the bow broke completely in two. I've seen dry rot and sun rot, but I've never seen anything on any car with such fragile plastic parts on this vehicle. Anyway, after checking on a new replacement part and seeing the exorbitant price for a plastic part for a 20-year-old vehicle, and since she's selling it, I'm just going to glue it together and put it back in and let it go. Like I said, it was broke when she got it and it's 20 years old. But I'd rather not sell it looking like it's been damaged. So!

I'm pretty sure I'm not the first one to have this problem (actually, two problems- the little plastic 'keeper' that you have to lift to get the stick shift off broke off while I was 'slightly lifting it'). What adhesive will work on this material and stay put? I have some JB Weld Plastic Repair stuff that's a dual mix epoxy that I tried on the center strip, but it wouldn't hold and it took forever to set up. I've read that Rhino Glue Gel, Heavy Duty is good, but I'd like to see what everybody here as done when this occurred. Any and all suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. Lee

Depends if it's PVC or ABS. PVC can usually be mended with pipe glue from Home Depot, but you definitely need a glue that works by dissolving the plastic surface. It doesn't take well to any sort of contact cement or epoxy. ABS is easier provided you clean it with a stripper like alcohol, then most adhesives will work on it. The best choice is usually cement for plastic models, that's a dissolving type and will give a strong bond on most styrenes.

Thanks, Vstar! A stripper or primer is something I hadn't even thought about, and I just did some pvc pipe work with the type that has to use primer. And the model glue had never even occured to me, even though I was a model builder when I was a kid. After I posted my question, I did go ahead and order the Rhino cement due all the great reviews on amazon. But I may just go get some modeling cement and try that first. Thanks again.

Well, after ordering some rhino glue, which is really good stuff, I decided to just get a used one. Since she's selling the van, I'm not forking out a hundred bucks for a new one that's probably made of the same brittle crap the old one is made of, I got a used one that shows all the same signs of brittleness as the old one. (Some of the screw bushings broke in half from just attempting to start one of the original screws in). But it's in one piece, anyway. It has broken clips on the back, just like the other one. So I put it back together and what wouldn't hold a screw or spring steel parts were missing, I just glued the thing. If it ever has to come out in the future, the person will just have to deal with it. Judging how the one I took out fell apart with no effort, I'd say the same will probably happen with this one, too. But it's in.
