Don't know why the OP removed his post and I don't have the link handy, but here's the essence of it (from memory):
1. tires have no official shelf life even though rubber ages and is less effective with time - even if completely unused2. people have had accidents where the tread had separated from the tire, causing death/injury (from apparently NEW tires which were manufactured many years previous), and some law suits are ongoing in the US3. the UK has publicly recommended that tires more than 6 years old be removed from sales4. Ford has written to the US goverment requesting the same 6-yr limit, but so far, no dice5. the US rubber manufacturer's assoc'n doesn't agree there's any problem, claiming there's no scientific evidence to support such a limit6. a tire's date of manufacture can be found on a tire using its "DOT" number - here's a Wikipedia link that discusses it quite well:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tire#DOT_Code7. the DOT code was never intended to inform the consumer so it may not be on the outward facing sidewall ... you may have to put the vehicle on a hoist or remove the wheel before you can see it8. 20/20 &/or ABC news went undercover and was able to find tires for retail sale throughout the US, between 6 and 12 years old
The OP claimed the OE tires on his EX were manufactured in 2000, but perhaps he's had a change of heart ... whether he misinterpreted the number or was contacted by his dealership with a threat/bribe, who knows?
Bottom line - join NICO and be safer and better informed!!!
