A friend of mine has a 720 and after witnessing how robust it's been over the years (385k on the clock) i've always wanted one myself. It's rare to see them for sale, however.

There's one in the local classifieds but I want some input from those more knowledgeable than myself before calling. It's a 1982 with a 1985 body, and 228,000km (~143k mi) on the odometer the ad reads:

Almost everything replaced with NEW parts, new rockers, fenders, doors, Dynamat sound proofing, clutch, release bearing, pilot bearing, flywheel, ring gear, h/o starter, battery, tires & rims, brakes, emergency brake cables, front-end, steel bumpers, 3" body lift, POR-15 rust proofed cab, undercoated and painted, new windshield, drive shafts and u-joints, rust cut out of box wheel skirts, new fuel tank and pump, runs great, dependable 228k-1982 w/1985 body

extra rust free pwr window doors (complete), grill guard, bucket seats
Is this worth looking into or should i run, not walk away. What do you think a fair price to offer would be?

I'm not so good on the phone so if you guys could suggest some good questions beyond the usual that would be great too!

I'd really like a small truck for camping/going for bush drives on the weekend. It's also fun to have a project to work on.

I would ask about the water pump, starter, & alternator, when were they last replaced, especially the water pump. Also ask about plugs and wires, transmission fluid, and the upper and lower ball joints.

With a truck with this much mileage, you need to pay attention to previous maintenance, was it taken care of, or only now and than.

If they don't know or are unsure, plan to replace parts pretty regularly for ahwhile. I would recommend immediately replacing the entire cooling system: radiator, all hoses, water pump, thermostat and new coolant.

Around here, the truck would be $800-$1200.

And yes, we need pics!

Sounds like a good start on a project. Don't know your location, but I'd be more concerned w/rust depending on where you live. Especially since the body's been swapped, and POR is mentioned. POR is definately great stuff, but look to see how they've done any bodywork. If it's professional, that's fine... mechanically, these things are easy and cheep. Someone mentioned a water pump... that would be the last thing I'd be worried about. They're like $20...

Around here a 2wd that's decent (all there, very minor rust) and runs goes about $650. 4wd's in same condition $800 to $1200.

For reference, I bought the one pictured below: 4wd King Cab, Z24 5-speed, a/c, bedliner, no rust for $900.

I've swapped the engine (1994 KA24E), upper and lower ball joints, tires, and front end alignment since buying it.

Well he wants $2500 for it :gotme

I didn't go see it in person as it's about a 1.5hr drive away.We had a good chat though. and I got him to email me a couple (crappy) pictures. He's currently unemployed and seemed eager to sell. I'll call back in a couple weeks. If he has still got it I'll make an offer in the 12-1500 range pending a personal inspection.

Small trucks run expensive where I'm at mainly due to scarcity and lots of rich people willing to pay more than they are worth. Especially Toyotas. I've seen people selling early '90s yota 4x4s with over 250,000 km for $5-8k.

I live in a semi arid, borderline desert climate, so corrosion isn't especially problematic. The roads are salted in the winter though which probably doesn't help.

The box looks to have some body work done and is unpainted. This isn't a huge issue for me as I have access to a booth and spray equipment. I'd probably just do a good Tremclad job since there's no way I can afford "real' paint.

I went and had a look at it today. Cab is in excellent condition, though I'm not a fan of the mirrors. Power steering has been installed. The box has had all the rust cut out and sheet metal welded in place. It's been sandblasted and epoxy coated. 3" body lift has been installed, as well as 3" susp. lift in the front end, which consists of (as I'm sure everyone is familiar with) tubular upper control arms and some bushings. the rear add a leaf has not been added, and since the truck sits level, the torsion rods probably havent been cranked. It's riding on 235/75R15 tires which are very close to rubbing at the bottom rear of the front wheel wells. I actually think there'd be more clearance without the lift. Given this truck's HP rating I dont think I'd add any larger tires without going to a lighter weight wheel($$$) The 2.2L engine pulls great at lower rpm. Tires and starter are new, as are the brakes. exhaust is good, hubs freshly packed. oil and air filter is dirty. the truck hasn't sat for the past 5 years or so. It started up no problem after 1.5 month since last start. It's been WELL below freezing all week, and today was certainly no exception. does not burn any oil.

The ride is quite rough, but the shifting is smooth, with no vibration thru the shifter during driving. No play at all in the steering. Drives true when I let go of the wheel. It could probably still go for an alignment due to the front susp. lift. With a fully dynamatted cab it's surprisingly quiet to drive, even at highway speeds. The power steering is not fantastic, but it's a heck of a lot better than armstrong. I think the leaf spring pivots (is that what it's called) are seized which may be a reason for the rough ride. Comes with 2 doors (por 15'd) with power windows/locks, brush guard, spare tire holder, and other various odds and ends for interior and exterior alike.

Here's a picture

Here's a front view without the bumper/grille. Both are installed now and look good.

I'd offer 1000 and negotiate up. But I'd try not to cross 1500. If they're hard to find then maybe 1800 but I'd cap it off at that.

Well after all this time she' s finally sitting in my driveway. The owner was busy with work, and then holidays, and then waiting for an inspection so it could be registered. It's got new bumpers since the last picture, as well as mud flaps and flares. He also had a spare tire mount as well as a jack mount made for the box. I've done an oil change. Diff oil front and rear looks fine but transmission and xfer case need a change. I will do this once it warms up a bit and once I get some GL-4 oil. cooling system flush is on the to do list as is a new rad cap. It came with a factory brush guard bumper that i need to put on, as well as some nerf bars that I need to finish some fabrication on. The box is full of parts that I have no room for... extra doors with pwr windows and locks, spare glass, 3 sets of spare tail lights, a spare set of interior door trim, spare actuators for pwr windows and locks, etc. i'm going to have to go through it and cull some stuff.

I have the day off tomorrow so I'll get some pictures for you all. I also accidentally unplugged the wire from the temp. sending unit when I was removing the oil filter. Damn that thing is a pain to plug back in. I think I'm going to have to remove the air cleaner and a bunch of vac lines and get a mirror on a stick.

That radiator is only held in with 4 bolts. I would take the whole thing out and getting it cleaned out. Not that hard.
