Started taking apart my KA to replace the timing chain and related. I have most of the parts on order through the Nissan dealer I used to work for and so far I have about an hour into it. The motor is dirty and needs a serious cleaning but besides that doesn't look bad. So far only the alternator adjustment bolt is fubar'd by a previous retard and will need to be replaced, nothing pisses me off more than ****ty cheap-*** work. I also decided to replace the water pump since it's right there and I'd be stupid not to. Here's a pic of my progress.

What do you guys think so far?

before you go anyferther sire....i sugest..renting..barrowing a pressure washer or a gas powerd steam cleaner and really get that block looking good..you dont want any unknown contaminants falling into the coolant/oil systems...

i normally take this time to clean up the engine bay allso..as it lets you see if anything is really leaking..before its to late!

good luck man

That's todays plan, I have a few can of CAT brake cleaner. I am gonna hit it with those for starts. Believe me I don't want anything falling in the pan while I am working away.

Not very happy right now. I found this sitting right behind where the tension guide used to sit on my KA24E. The rest is inside the oil pan. Not pleased. I don't think the front cover has been damaged though which is a good thing. All that is left is the metal backing plate where the plastic guide used to be. And here's a pic of all that is left of the plastic guide...

your not in to bad of shape man..thats actually common for the ka engines to loose a chain guide when there are used up..the oil sump tube has a good screen on it and probly saved you...i would drop the oil pan...buy a new oil/waterpump..and get on with the rest of it..ohh..dont forget the thermostat..whilst your there...its cool ya cought that too man..good catch.

Update:

Removed the oil pan tonight. Hey guess what I found?!? The rest of the tension guide! Yep floating around in the residual oil at the bottom of the pan. Cracked into at least 10 medium sized chunks and a lot of micro sized dust. No metal found yet which is a good thing. Wish I started this project sooner but hindsight, you know. Nissan will have the bulk of my parts in on Friday. The pan is going with me to work tomorrow and is going to spend some time in the parts washer. Various other parts are now primed and awaiting a fresh coat of paint. Not bad for spending a few hours leisurely working on this thing.

Coulda been a lot worse. None of those chunks are going to get past the oil pickup screen. The finer pieces arnt going to do any dammage to the oil pump, and the filter is going to pick them up.

GL with the rest of it.

Good luck. I've replaced the timing chain once on the ka24e. It was a ***** the first time through. Just remember to mark your distributor and note how the half moon is facing when you pull the oil pump out. Dont' over torque bolts and mark which bolts go where. Took me a long time just to clean everything and put stuff back carefully.

I did spend a bunch of time washing up parts last night in the company parts washer. I only have a couple things left to remove before I can replace the chain. I would like to paint everything up nice while I still have it apart too.

While you're at it might as well replace the front oil seal and don't forget to lube up the oil seal before pressing it into the front cover. Other than that you should be golden. Prime the oil pump before initial start.

Oh yeh, I have a brand new OEM front seal.

While we are on the topic...anyone know if a Z24 tension guide will swap into a KA24E? There's enough depth to fit.

Old parts:

New parts installed:

While I was at it:

Tomorrow I plan on taking the front cover to a high pressure washer, it's caked with oily love. Then a nice coat of paint to go long with the VC.

RE: Z24 tension guide...won't fit. Bolt holes different.
