so i've just had my filter changed and the fluid flushed and asked my mechanic to return the old filter to me. didn't know what to expect, but i managed to pry it open and have a look. there were some (a few dozen) small (this size: ' ) metal filings at the bottom of the tray, and on the screen there were more, but smaller, filings collected mostly where the screen met the internal edges of the filter housing. all in all i didn't think it was too many or too bad. i am happy to know that they didn't take part in the flushing process, that's for sure. anybody else take one apart and see worse or better? it occurs to me now i should have taken a picture for general reference but i've already chucked the thing in the trash.
