What part is this(injector related)

sorry about the crappy picture quality. But what purpose does the little brass peice on the top of the injector serve. I was taking some 370cc injectors out of a rail, and hit the little brass peice on the top of the injector with some plyers and it broke off. Im not sure what the thing does, but i put the injector in #1 cylinder of my Ka just to see if the injector still worked or not, and it still worked fine. But it still bugs me not knowing what purpose it serves. Any help appreciated. Thx

might be a seal of sort, like a o 'ring does it leak at all after start up?
