I read somewhere on here that you can only put a gl-4 gear oil in the trans. Well i have went to every auto parts store in my area along with calling a few placing and no one has gl-4. They have all tried to sell me gl-5 fluid. So what should i use. I really need to change my oil becouse i know it hasn't been changed. is there a place online you could order it from?Thanx

get some redline or royal purple. Its the absolute best for it, I dont care what anybody says. Trust, and you wont be disappointed.

redline is good. my friend is a nissan mech. and he gave me a tip. run 10W30 full synthetic in the trans. i have done this in my celica and the trans. has never shifted better. but i have not tried this in my 240 yet. just an opinion

GL5 has more detergents/ additive package is different. GL5's additives are more potent than the GL4 and is considered to be corrosive to the yellow metals (brass, bronze types of metals) found in our transmissions so it is not advised to use them. It is possible to shorten the lives of the synchonizers.

If all else fails, get some from the dealer. They are sure to have some. If price is a big deal to you, other (non-Nissan) dealers use GL4 too, so you can even check around for the best price.

If price is not a big deal, then the premium/racing brands like Red Line and such, would be a better choice.

ok i went to the nissan dealer by me and they didn't have any gl-4 instock. My brother also used 10w30 synthetic in his honda trans. I can get mobil 1 synthetic for next to nothing. Maybe i will try that. does redline or royal purple have a gl rating?

Some MT are specified to use regular motor oil, as in 10w-30 and some even use ATF dextron/ mercon, but that doesn't mean you should use it in your transmission that actually specifies GL4. I know GL4 is harder to find, but I personally rather leave that old oil in there than compromise with some other oil. Just my opinion, but it's your transmission...

Yes you have a point but, I had a leaky primary boot on my shifter. The one that actually hold in the oil. It had some big holes in it and oil was everywhere. So i poured like a half quart of 10w-30 in there, while changing my shifter, just to make sure it wasn't dry. Is there somewhere online i can buy gl-4 gear oil. In the past week i have honestly checked every autoparts store and none have even heard of the stuff.

I know this may sound dumb, have you you done a google search on that oil...Chances are it may lead you to some company who sells it, or at the worst ccase, it will send you to a site full on info on that oil...Oh and good luck with that.

Transmission gear oil capacity can be found in the FSM. So can anything else for that matter.

niznos- i have the service manual and know it takes 2.4l. I was just wondering how many quarts that would be about. Or how many containers of redline.chingon- i have been trying to find gl-4 pennzoil for sometime now with no luck. That why im going redline.

Anyone- should i get mt-90 or stick with mtl? i live in NJ where the temps get down to the low teens in the winter.

1 qt is 0.946 L, so they are almost the same volume. You will need 3 bottles then.

OH... the penzoil synchromesh is not rated gl-4 per se... It is designed w/gm transmissions which used yellow metals in mind. It has been successfully used in rx-7's, gsm's, toyota, and honda transmissions which required gl-4 certified lubricants. That being said, most users prefer it over redline ;)

ok i bought some synchromesh and I changed my fluid. there was only about a quart and a half in there and it was like a bronzy color with metal flakes. I didn't do the overfill method but i put in about 2 and a half quarts seeing as not all of the old fluid could have drained. I had a problem with one of the mounting u-shaped things for the megan shifter. the two bolt came unwelded and the u thing fell. So i'm jb-welding it now. After i will complete the install. Does anyone have any ideas what i can use to sub for the rubber oil boot on the shifter. Mine was ripped and was leaking oil pretty bad. Something from rice boys perhaps?
