I was searching the forums for what kind of oil ya'll use in your sr20det's and exactly how much(quarts)...I first 240sx with the ka i would use Castrol GTX High Mileage about 10w-40 weight and that motor had about 180,000. But i'm not sure which oil to use in the sr20 that i will be purchasing come first of the year.

If someone knows a link to a forum already posted like this please add link if i missed it.

mobile1 10w-30Surely you have a Walmart nearby, right?

The redline/royal purple products are for the hardcore racer that has his engine at redline most of the time. For the street, they are not worth the extra money.I do recommend a Nissan OEM oil filter part number 53J00.I had a fram, but it leaked, so off it came, plus I got a deal on a case of OEM filters.

We can't tell you what oil to use. You need to determine which oil gives you the proper oil pressure on your engine. Your buddy's sr may need 40 weight oil to get the proper oil pressure, while yours may need 30. Start with 5w-30 or 0w-30 if you can find it. Go from there. If you don't have an oil pressure gauge, you're kinda screwed. 0w-30 is a safe bet for a daily driver, or 5w-30 if you have to. Stay away from race-oriented oils. Not because they're not worth the money, but because they're usually meant to be used in engines which get rebuilt every few races. They don't have the same detergents as normal oils.

You see 0w-xx oils more in the north. You probably wont see a whole lot of them anywhere down south, 10w30 is plenty thin for southern winters.

Mobil 1 Synthetic 0W-40 with a K&N filter, but I am thinking of switching to the new Mobil 1 Syn EP 10W-40.

Unless you live in a place where winter ambient temperatures are almost hot enough to boil water, 10w-30 is not what I would consider thin enough. No oil is thin enough for a cold start in even the hottest climate on earth. If it were, it would be useless when the engine warmed up. We just have to make due with what we have. 0w-30 for teh win! I think you'll only find it in synthetic.

I'm not too positive on the idle oil pressure for the 2.4 but it should be around 40psi. At cold start it should be around 60psi. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but this is was I have experienced with a similiar engine.

I would strongly recommend that people don't use Castrol products. Castrol doesn't pump their own oil, they buy from different people every month depending on who will sell them oil the cheapest, so their product's quality is different from bottle to bottle. They pretty much just slap their name on there. Mobil 1 is great stuff! Stick with the Mobil 1 synthetic. Pennzoil kind of has a reputation for breaking down really quickly, but I don't know if it's true or not. And also, Quaker State is now owned by Pennzoil, and uses Pennzoil stock, so they're pretty much the same. Hope this helps out a little bit.

Check an sr fsm for the oil pressure. I believe the ka is supposed to be >15 at idle and around 65 at 3500 rpm, but please don't take my word for it. That is off the top of my head and I don't think it's completely accurate.

Yeah that's another discussion all to itself. Many many different opinions on that one. I would say oem or mobil 1 are fine. Stay away from fram. That's only my opinion.
