Mobil 1. No need to explain, if it wasn't the best it wouldn't be so widely useed and recommended.

Depends on what you are trying to accomplish with oil and the amount of safety reserve you want for the chance of an overheat.

Dennis in the situation you mentioned what one would you go with for reserve protection and my driving style, I drive very short trips with a few 7000 rpm pulls, also I have not driven my Q 3000 miles since febuary of this year. Im leaning towards the MOBIL 1.

I realize this is a query directed at Q operators but in my J I would run Exxon Gold. It is hard to find in this neck of the woods so I've been using Mobil. Now that Exxon and Mobil have merged, are they going to drop one of the brands? Hmmm.... The Exxon Gold is substantially cheaper and fully synthetic. When I was at AutoZone a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that they have an in store synthetic brand that is way cheap. I wonder who is supplying it for them.

We only get one Mobil 1 grade here in Aus. To many of you, this may be a surprise, but most of the mechanics over here won't put it in a Go-cart. It's total crap in a lot of cars.

My relo put it in his Pajero, & it used 10 litres in 2,000ks, my neighbour ut it in his 4wd & blew the engine, I put it in my Q45 & it started to rattle in the lifters, I have many mechanic friends who can give me numerous stories about how bad this oil seems to be. (btw, my relo put in Valvoline & used NOTHING!)

I tried ELF synthetic, but found it Too think. Was VERY slippery, buy seemed to take a bit of power from the engine.I now use Penrite 15, which is a Semi Synthetic Aussie made oil & it is Very good. A lot of racing teams used this oil & then displayed other brands on their car.The other oil I like is Valvoline Dura-Blend.

All to his own, though, but the main point is, use a reputable brand & use one of their Higher grades & all should be OK & you'll get good engine life.

I saw some full syn in WalMart (can't remember the name) that was about 1/3 the price of M1... Who makes WalMart's store brand oil?

I'm gonna be bent if it's made by a major manufacturer... Then i'll go buy several cases.

Hmm I may not be Dennis but I will have to do for now..:D

Check out the oils article in the article section, also the link posted above, to the other poll ,answers some of your questions.

Short summary:Our driving environments are similiar(short trips, some HARd driving), except I drive more miles.I also make sure I drive it real hard (going from 55mph to 11mph up an hill) at least a couple of times a months to keep the chambers clean.I prefer ValvolineSynPower 5w-40, becasue it is higher detergency than MOBIL1 and a readily available 40 full PAO syn. This detergent package is important in our higher mile engines.

I want 40 wieght oil due to my hard revving driving habits.I feel a 30 weight is too thin.Especially a MOBIL1 30 weight, which tends to run in the thinner range of what is still considered reeportable as a 30 weight.ie a 27 weight or so, if u reported it as accurate as that ,instead of the standard SAE viscosity steps. Also MOBIL 1 has a history of losing viscosity and going down in viscosity during use.(oil analysis sources primarily on VQ30 and VQ35 engines).

ValvolineSYnPower as a 30 weigth(in a 10w-30) is a bit thicker at operating temps despite teh same value reported for viscosity.

But I feel I want 40 weight oil.5w-40 is a bit of a larger spread with regardsv to VI's than I like, but with my religously prompt oil changes (3000 miles) its a non issue for me.Aslo in a PAO syn VI's are not such a huge problem to begin with. And the 5w- part enables me to run this oil thru a Kentucky winter.(in Minnesota or so I would go thinner)

THe 40 weight oil that u can get in a MOBIL1 is a 0w-40 probaly a good oil it meets teh same rigirous specs for hard driving that teh 5w-40 from SynPower does, but the spread in a 0w-40 is getting a bit too large for comfort for me even in a full syn oil.

Fred...:)

Excuse all teh typos I didnt feel like editing this longer write-up.

Also be sure to still change oils in a reasonable interval by months even if you dont put on many miles.

Thanks Palmer, my SE-R does not like Mobil 1 it would make a ton of noise after a hard run with the oil only having 1500-2000 miles on it, this motor does see CONSISTENT 8000 rpm shifts, The Q on the other hand didnt seem to mind the Mobil 1, Im gonna use it for a month then try somethin else, I might just go back to using AMSOIL or try the Valvoline. Thanks
