They say to use 91 but is it really necessary? Do you use 89 or 87 with same results? Any long term effects if use 87?

I don't mean to come across like a dork, but this subject has been discussed many many times, at great depth, over the last few months.I suggest going back and checking some older threads, or doing a search on the subject. There was a lot of good information in some of the threads about octane ratings and what it all means. In the end, it comes down to what you are comfortable with. If it runs good on 87 octane gas, then stick with that. Don't waste money if you don't have to.

for 20 gallons of 87 @3.5 per gallon u spend 70 dollars, for 20 gallons at 3.7 per gall. u spend 74 dollars..

there's only 4 dollar difference - so i guess just follow the required octane.

otherwise just get a minivan then you can save better.

The manual probably recommends a RON (Research Octane Number) of 91. Here in the US, gasoline pumps don't display the RON but rather an anti-knock index (AKI). To further complicate things, AKI is also known as the (R+M)/2 method.

Read up in your owner's manual about the recommended AKI and fill up with that.

i use 87 on my 3.3. My parents have an 03 land rover discovery with a 4.0L V8. just the other day i took it for a spin and put gas in it and noticed "premium only" yet theyve been putting 87 in since they first bought it two years ago. id personally follow the manual but im sure it doesnt hurt as long as you dont get knocks with 87

I use 91 octane gas in my '03. I've found that while the premium gas costs about 10% more, I get 20% better mileage with it compared to 87 octane.

In fact, I tried 87 octane again on Friday. With premium I'll typically have 110 - 120km when the fuel gauge reads 3/4 full... today, I was at the 90-95km mark when that happened.

The 3.5L is designed for premium gas. It'll run fine on regular (even says so in the manual), but you won't get the same mileage. At least in my experiences.

In my 02 pathy with the manual trans I use 91. Its a HUGE difference for me over 85 and 87. So I stick with high octane.

I use 89 most of the time in my 02 4WD PF LE. I'm getting just below 19 MPG on many freeway trips, and I'm not a slow driver - avg about 80 - 85 MPH. Remember this is rated for 15 / 18, so no downside on "low" octane for me.
