Among off-the-shelf oils:

winter Mobil1 0w-40Summer Mobil1 15w-50

(I just saw Cold zeros WRX used oil analysis on M1 0w-40 as winter oil looked <real> good.)

Fred...:)

I will either be using Mobil 1 20W-50 or the Valvoline equivalent once it's broken in. During the first 3000 miles, I'll be using Castrol GTX (non syn. very good oil) in as close to a 15 or 20W-50 as possible, I dont remember the weights it comes in.

ok someone help me out on this. i was wondering the same thing, and i really want to switch to some kind of synthetic, but my dad insists that if i put it in there, it could leak through the seals (because is thinner) and cause horrific headaches and be a pain in the *** to fix, anyone heard anything of the such? or does he just have out-dated information?

it wont hurt anything if you put synthetic oil in your motor now. however if you just got it rebuilt and run synthetic then you can have some major problems. i get my amsoil through my dad (hes a individual seller, just so we can get it at cost lol) but i have seen some shops that carry it. just look for the 'amsoil dealer' signs. a good thing about amsoil is you dont have to change it for a loooong time, just the filters every 3k. worth the money. and oh synthetic isnt thinner than regular oils its slicker. lubes it better and causes less friction. you will notice a difference when you switch oils.

I've been using Mobil 1 syn 15w - 50 for the 3 years I've had my KAT. She is still running beautifully.

I did however have someone telling me about Synergyn race fluids and that I should switch and swear by them. Anyone know anything about them?

How exactly do you change the filter without losing a bunch of oil?

Why should i not run full Syn on rebuild startup & breakin ? I am hooked on Redline Fluids myself.

My machine shop also told me not to go anywhere near syn's for at least 3-5k miles. Why? I dont know...but I know I'm listening to them.

Same here Nathan. The reasoning I don't know. But when dropping money into an engine and a professional shop telling me to do something.....yeah i'll do whatever they say.

maybe the extra friction helps the motor break in better, that's my guess...

well not unless you cange your oil filter when the car is running you wont have any problems. you will lose a lil bit but you just top it off. and thats the whole idea of using regular conventional oil during break in period. it lets all the moving parts seat. if you used synthetic oil it would be to slick for the moving parts seat/wear properly.

Mineral oil also helps the seals seat and seal better before using the more slick synth oil.
