Im looking to fit some new lower profile tires to my rims for the winter. They are 20 X 8.5" (taken from sticker on inside of rim)

Im looking to go with a lower profile to lower the car some and look better. Right now they have a 275/50/20 tire on them.

Im curious what the min and max I should go with is. I was thinking of getting something like 245/35-40/20

Thanks for any opinions

Don't go lower profile. The profile you have is close to stock, and going lower would screw with your ABS, traction control, and speedometer. In fact, you could stand to go up to 245/50's.

If you're going to stick with 245's (and not drop down - 225 is the narrowest you'll get on there without stretch, but you probably only want that for winter tires), I'd say it's iffy with a 245/45/20, and best with a 245/50/20. If you want lower-profile tires, you'll need a larger diameter wheel.

Really this rim could fit a 225/35/20 or 225/40/20 tire without being stretched on??

I understand the problems that could come with going smaller diameter than stock though, Im lowerring the car a little aswell and just want a more agressive look with less sidewall

225 would probably looks a little small on an suv though??

Lower profile tires = generally less traction in winter.

Some "winter performance" tires are better than others, but generally, you're going to sacrifice safety by going the way you want to. I'm surprised you're Canadian (as your name entails) and don't know that...

No.

245/50 is a smaller overall diameter than 275/50. As the section width changes, the OD changes as well, unless you change the aspect ratio. The "50" means the sidewall is 50% of the section width.

Changing tire size to "lower" a car is a bad idea.

Stick with the same overall diameter. Wider is fine, but that means you'll just have to adjust the aspect ratio.

Realistically, you're running a perfect size as it is.

Misread; thought he said he was on 245's already. Just the same, don't go lower profile unless you've got bigger wheels.
