My biggest problem when I went hunting for my Z was finding one a near-stockish one, with low miles and the Brembos. I was willing to settle for a Touring and upgrade the brakes later but I really wanted a Track model. I found a couple that were pretty far away that I paid local mechanics to take a look at after the CarFax reports came back clean. One was up in Minnesota and the other was relatively close by in Atlanta but neither panned out.
I checked out other cars but never was in one that wowed me. Other have already read this before but I tried out a Boxster (too much dollar for too little return) and S2000 (fun but too small to be livable on a daily basis) and even an MR2 Spyder and the venerable Miata (loved the top down but too small and underpowered).
I ended up driving home one day and the local Nissan dealer had a 35th Anniversary on the lot with low miles...it was in my garage that same week.
Not sure what to tell you about the ones that you've driven though. Mine was amazing on the test drive. The Porsche had better steering feel (a hallmark of every Porshce I've driven, even the pudgy 928) the S2000 was responsive, agile and had the wail of a banshee when the tach wound up near the 9K mark, but nothing had the combination of what I had experienced in the Z; low end grunt, massive stoppers, agile enough for daily driving and track work (though I had little doubt an S2000 would slither faster through a tight course), and roomy enough for daily driving and weekend getaways. If I could put it on a diet it would be a nearly perfect car. But then I suppose I'd have to follow suit.

I'm over in the Tri-Cities, about 20 minutes from Virginia and maybe 30 minutes from North Carolina and I commute to Asheville, NC which makes winter time interesting (I have no concerns over my ability on the snow, just the natives) but the drive in the spring and summer makes it all worth it.
Then there's the added benefit of being a quick trip away from Tail of the Dragon (even though it's almost ALWAYS too crowded with traffic and IS ALWAYs too crowded with troopers*), I prefer US 421 (The Snake usually just the Bristol, TN to Banner Elk or Boone, NC stretch) since it's a longer drive and never as crowded.
