Good luck concealing it. If the cop knows what he's looking for and he sees it, you're screwed.

And I don't think the SR is supposed to spark from the exhaust, unless it is not properly tuned.

i know in illinois when i got pulled over for my exhaust they didnt make me pop ****. i would have laughed if they did, becauase my intake has a bid CARB certified badge on it. most cops wont know if its illegal though, if its a stock sr. a nissan is a nissan.

This is pure supposition, but unless you're in CA, I don't think a cop would know your SR wasn't supposed to be in the 240SX. Now, things like big loud exhausts, intake systems, big *** FMIC's...those would probably get him a bit suspicious.

If you get pulled over, be real polite and hope the officer is in a forgiving mood that night.

Hey, maybe donate some money to the FOP...I think they give you little cards to carry in your wallet. That can't hurt.

Its a big risk getting an SR, especially as a daily driver. Depending where you are cops may not know what it is and/or wont be as anal and impound you. If you do get impounded though, your looking at maybe 1000 dollars in costs, not to mention not having a car. And when you do get your car back, you will have to put the KA back. Definitely a big risk.

Here in Canada it doesnt matter whats under your hood. We do have a minimum hieght restriction and we can tint the front passenger and driver windows.

Other then that we can run anything we like under the hood.

probable cause - The amount of facts and circumstances within the police officer's knowledge that would warrant a reasonable person to conclude that a particular individual has committed a crime or that a specific item related to a criminal activity will be found in a particular place

Haha. I wouldn't think a cop would ask you to pop your hood. How much do cops really know about the 240 anyway? I mean, do you think he'd be able to tell you had a redtop sr rather than a DOHC ka? would he even know what that hell an RB is? I wouldn't worry, just don't drive wrecklessly and you'll be fine. If you DO get a cop on you in a canyon or something, just lose him. He's too heavy to keep up. Haha. Eh, disregard that last comment if you're sane. PEACE. Tek.

or smart.

teh cops theys might knows what hte sr is...

under this theory, you can always put a turbo decal on the car and hope they think it's a stock turbo car.

I just don't think that a cop would have a rounded knowledge of cars and the appearance of their engines. I think the turbo would be the giveaway, but other than that I doubt they know what engines are in what cars, and what possible swapped engines look like. I think Mr1der has the best idea. PEACE. Cops are getting more and more saavy about what they know. Usually not specifics, but they can recognize many parts(intercoolers) and with the hood open, if it doesn't look stock, and there are no CARB EO numbers they will probably cite you. A cop may not think anything of a stock SR.

And a KA turbo is just as illegal as an SR. That is until someone finally gets a CARB EO number for a kit. No telling if that will even happen for sure.

My suggestion, stay low on the radar. Stay away from pillar mounted guages(especially the boost gauge). I've painted my front mount black so it's hard to tell it's there. My car really only looks like it has an exhaust and wheels. Nothing a cop would be overly concerned about. My boost gauge and turbo timer are mounted under my radio. Last time I got pulled over, I happened to pull all of my papers out of the dash and put the ones the officer doesn't need over the gauge and timer before the cop got to my car. And take your time slowing down. Let it coast to a small extent while the engine idles. This way you can turn the turbo timer off sooner. Just make sure you are aware of your surroundings. Coasting to a stop for 15 seconds in a residential area probably isn't going to go over too well. But try not to let the turbo timer shut off your car. It can be a givaway. Especially if you are holding your keys in front of the cop when the car shuts off.

thats kinda funny,a good suggestion with the timer if they are fluent in that kinda thing.but here in columbus last week i got pulled over for my tint and exhaust(no ticket) and the officer told me to turn my car off,ok did that pulled the key out, set it on the dash.still running on the timer.the cop took a couple steps back to the cruiser and realized what was happening.he came back to the window and i had to explain to him what the timer does and why.he thought it was pretty cool.

in Ca, CHP is whole different story. watch out for chp in all white patrol crown vic's with only the star on the doors. these are C.A.R.B. officers. they're the ones who patrol around looking for imports that may have illegal aftermarket parts. if they catch you with an illegal motor they take a bunch of pictures of the engine bay and you're cited. then you're sposed to change out the motor and go pass a visual and smog insepection.

they know about all the different engine options in almost all imports, they know what they look like, how to identify everything, and they even read imports magz.

i got pulled over at the end of last year, exhaust was loud, by one of em and he said its gettin to be a big problem with engine swaps. he asked me to pop my hood but i'll i have under there is a tired old SOHC ka..:D

thats why if i get an sr20det in my 240 now, i'm gonna get another 240 and keep it legal so i'll have something as a daily driver.

Are you guys sure the SR wasnt made to spark stock I remember reading something about how Japanese people loved the 4th of July fireworks and wanted the SR to shoot flames out the exhaust stock.

IF you believe this then your crazy. :)

one advice, shut off the engine if you're stop by a cop; that way he wouldn't hear your engine nor smell the open exhaust smell of your wastegate, etc.

and second, don't have a bunch of glaring gauges, it just ask them to be more suspicious. driving like a fool would always be noticed.

a sleeper look is also as effective.

If you're here in CA, you have to be carefull, but anywhere else in the country and you're probaly fine. They have training for CHP officers to identify illegal parts and engines in addition to the CARB officers. Just remember, they have to pull you over for SOMETHING, not just cause they think you MIGHT have something under the hood. Then again, they can make up whatever they want... :rolleyes
