do your homework ! Some cams simply move your power around on the curve. Your best bet would be to figure out what your going to do for your exhaust as a whole, intake, ECU, injectors and match the cam to those.

If you do alot of city driving then a full race set wouldnt do you any good as the power is on the top of those. You'll need to find a happy medium.

I had a Nissan motorsports drop in installed during my last rebuild and didnt think it did much... so now, I get to spend a few hundred more to get a more aggressive cam put in.

I wish I would of read more... then asked more specific questions, then read some more then asked the pros for opinions.

AS I'm doing a SOHC that will be used as a toy, my opinions on Cam choice wont mean shiz to you... lol.

Hope this didnt sound like a ramble and you got something out of it. cheers

You can gain alot from cams. It depends on how "hot" of a cam you decide to go with.

For example.

A stock regrind to a 248 duration, .410 lift will get you all of 7-10whp.

A billet grind of a 272 duration, .430 lift will get you about 20whp on the big end.

The regrind will have a powerband similar to stock but the billet cores will come on around 3800 rpm and still be making peak power at redline.

Nearly any performance cam you go with will require you to mill the head, get custom shims made, and upgrade the valve springs. When you get that work done have the head shaved a little for more compression but be careful to not shave so much that you risk having the valve strike the piston. It also is a good time to replace your valve seals and do a little dremel work on those ports. You can match the ports to the gaskets fairly easily if you be steady and take your time. Be sure to only go about 1" maximum into the port.
